Kat Von D is known as a celebrity tattoo artist. But, she’s now looking to cover up her tattoos with solid black ink. While some people are confused about this decision, here’s what Kat Von D has to say about it in her own words.
Kat Von D is famous for tattooing.
Kat Von D, or Katherine von Drachenburg, became famous after starring on the TLC show, Miami Ink, in the early 2000s. Now 42, she has since launched her own makeup brand and become a media personality.
She started getting tattoos when she was 14.
Kat Von D got her first tattoos at 14 and has had many others since then, which makes sense given she became a tattoo artist herself.
However, now she is covering up most of her tattoos with more tattooing, although it’s solid black ink this time.
Her decision was partially motivated by her new faith.
Von D had an interview with Inked Mag, in which she explained her decision. She said that she began to feel differently about all her tattoos after converting to Christianity, although she also had complicated feelings about her tattoos already.
She didn’t want to be reminded of certain parts of her life.
Von D explained, “I think I had been fed up with a lot of the tattoos I got over the years for a long time,” she confessed to the publication.
“Some people are fine with keeping these types of landmarks in time on them – I personally grew tired of waking up to them, and seeing those constant reminders every time I looked in a mirror.”
She is sharing her journey on Instagram.
Von D hired artist Hoode Philly to erase all her tattoos by covering them up with black out ink. She said, “I think at that time I thought I would just black out an arm, but shortly after, I knew I would end up tattooing my whole body.”
So far, she’s had 17 sessions.
Given that Von D has many tattoos all over her body, the process isn’t an easy or short one. As of right now, she’s had around 17 sessions with Hoodie Philly and will need many more.
All these sessions add up to around 40 hours of tattooing. She also shared that the process was about 80% finished.
Von D also shared a video of her baptism.
When Von D was officially baptized about a year ago, she posted a video to Instagram. The video shows her wearing a white robe while being baptized by a Christian priest.
In the video, he says, “Katherine von Drachenberg, upon your profession of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in obedience to His Divine command, I baptize you, my sister, in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.”
She felt that her tattoos were crutches.
After converting, Von D explained she had searched for meaning in the occult but was looking in the wrong places.
She explained in the interview that, “I don’t want these crutches in my life anymore, and that’s what I really saw them as. I just want Jesus, and it’s a very narrow road. I feel like all these other, these breathing techniques, or spell work, nature worship, all these things, they’re just crutches. They’re not really my answer.”
