Have you ever experienced spanking during your childhood? The use of spanking as a form of discipline for children has sparked considerable debate, with the American Academy of Pediatrics asserting that this method is both ineffective and detrimental. Nevertheless, some parents, including singer Kelly Clarkson, continue to support its use.
Indeed, the renowned singer is one such mother, and she defended her stance during a radio interview in 2019.
Kelly, who is the mother of two children, River Rose, aged 8, and Remy, aged 6, stated that she “is not opposed to spanking” as a disciplinary measure. “I don’t mean hitting her hard,” she clarified. “I just mean a little spanking.”
This was a practice she experienced in her own upbringing, and she sees no issue with it.
“My parents spanked me, I turned out fine in life and I feel good about it,” Kelly, who hails from Texas, remarked.
“I’m from the South, y’all, so we receive spankings. My mother would contact the principal if I ever found myself in the principal’s office and grant permission for her to spank me… I consider myself a well-rounded individual with a strong character, so I believe it’s acceptable.”
Clarkson, who is not only a successful singer but also a songwriter, author, and television personality, recently earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The American Idol star acknowledged that her parenting approach is contentious and expressed the challenges she faces when needing to discipline her children in public settings.
“That’s a complicated situation when you’re in public, because people tend to think that’s inappropriate or something, but I see nothing wrong with a spanking,” she stated. “I do believe in spanking, so you might see me spanking my child at the zoo.”
However, she emphasized that she always gives her children a warning in advance.
“I’m like, ‘Hi, I’m going to spank you on your bottom if you don’t stop right now, this is ridiculous,’ and honestly it’s really helped. She doesn’t do that kind of stuff as often.”
Do you agree with Kelly Clarkson’s way of disciplining children? Or do you think everyone should be left to discipline their children as they see fit?
