Music icon Bruce Springsteen, a prominent critic of President Donald Trump, took the stage at the 2026 Light of Day Winterfest, which took place at the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank, New Jersey, where he conveyed a powerful message regarding the death of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother of three who was shot by an ICE agent.
During his surprise performance, Springsteen delivered his iconic 1978 hit song The Promised Land. Prior to beginning his performance, he addressed the audience, stating, “I wrote this song as a tribute to American potential.
“At this moment, we are experiencing extraordinarily pivotal times. The United States, along with the ideals and values it has upheld for the past 250 years, is undergoing a test unlike any seen in modern history. Those values and ideals have never faced such peril as they do now.”
He went on to say: “If you believe in the rule of law and that no one is above it, if you oppose heavily-armed masked federal troops invading an American city and employing gestapo-like tactics against our fellow citizens, if you believe that you should not be killed for exercising your American right to protest, then send a message to this president, as the city’s mayor stated: ICE should get the f—k out of Minneapolis. This song is dedicated to you and in memory of the mother of three and an American citizen, Renee Good.
The audience broke in applause and cheers.
Springsteen is not the only celebrity who has voiced opposition to ICE following the tragic killing of Good. Billie Eilish, Dave Matthews, and Duran Duran have also condemned the recent incident.
Springsteen has previously articulated strong sentiments against Donald Trump and his administration.
In a June 2025 interview with The New York Times, the singer-songwriter offered a critical perspective on the former president’s leadership and the impact of his policies on the nation’s social fabric.
“It’s an American tragedy,” he remarked. “I believe it was the combination of the deindustrialization of the country and the significant rise in wealth inequality that left many individuals behind. This situation created an environment conducive to a demagogue. And while I can hardly believe it was this fool who emerged, he certainly met the criteria for some people.”
