Zoos typically display signs near animal enclosures to caution visitors against approaching too closely. Nevertheless, this did not deter a courageous truck driver from entering an enclosure to rescue a chimpanzee in distress.
While Rick Swope, along with his wife and their three children, was observing the animals at the Detroit Zoo, they observed a confrontation occurring between two male chimpanzees.
Jo-Jo, a chimpanzee known for his non-aggressive demeanor, attempted to evade a confrontation but unfortunately fell into a deep moat. The distressed animal began to struggle in the water, while bystanders looked on in helplessness, unaware of the gravity of the situation.
Without a moment’s hesitation, Swope leaped into the water. He swiftly grasped the chimp and brought him back to safety. The spectators were left in utter astonishment at the remarkable event that had just transpired before them.
“It was the most pitiful sight I have ever witnessed,” Swope remarked following the rescue. “The chimp had his hands raised, with only his head above the water, gazing at the crowd as if pleading for help.”
Throughout the rescue, zoo personnel urged Swope to exit the water, but he was resolute in his determination to save Jo-Jo. “People were directing me to his location,” Swope recounted. “The water was so murky that visibility was nearly impossible. I swam along the bottom until I finally located him.”
Luckily, Swope managed to get Jo-Jo over a cable designed to keep chimps from slipping in the moat.
He appeared quite devoid of vitality, yet it was evident that he was still among the living. His gaze was fixed upon me, and I believe he comprehended the situation, Swope remarked.
Jo-Jo met Swope’s gaze directly, as if expressing gratitude. He recognized that a man had intervened to save his life that day.
“I happened to lock eyes with him, and it felt as though I was peering into the eyes of a fellow human, conveying a silent plea: ‘Will no one come to my aid?’”
Jane Goodall from the zoo remarked on the challenges faced by Jo-Jo throughout his life. He was taken to the zoo at a young age following the tragic death of his mother, who was a victim of poachers.
“[But] if you see that look with your eyes, and you feel it in your heart, you have to jump in and try to help,” she said.
This is definitely one of the most dramatic rescues you’ve ever seen. Swope is such an incredible man. He risked his life for an animal’s and that speaks a lot of his bravery.
