This film, originating from India, was first released in 2010 but was initially blocked from being shown in its own country.
Now, 14 years later, both films still capture the public’s interest and have generally received favorable reviews from critics.
The film in question was directed by Qaushiq Mukherjee, often just called ‘Q’.
However, this film isn’t about simulated acts typical of mainstream Hollywood, where everything is staged, shot from various angles, and then cleverly edited to appear real.
This approach garnered significant controversy upon its release, leading to instances where audience members chose to walk out during screenings.
It follows the turbulent life of a teenage rapper who resorts to stealing from his mother’s lover to support his drug habit, all while trying to carve out a space for himself in the music industry.
The film features numerous explicit scenes between Gandu’s mother, played by Kamalika Banerjee, and her lover, portrayed by Silajit Majumder, which the protagonist, Gandu, portrayed by Anubrata Basu, inadvertently witnesses.
At the 2011 Slamdance Festival, the director commented on the chemistry between the actors, noting they were “good friends” who embraced the spirit of their favorite extreme films, such as “The Idiots,” as highlighted in a review by Hammer to Nail.
The movie doesn’t shy away from explicit language either, with a range of swear words including ‘c***’, ‘f**k’, and ‘p***y’.
Despite its controversial content, “Gandu” holds a rating of 18 in the UK and faced significant taboos in India, not receiving a screening there until July 2021 at the Osian Film Festival.
“Gandu” is now streaming on Netflix.
