Netflix Documentary Compared To Handmaid’s Tale Called ‘One Of The Most Disturbing’ Series Ever

Netflix’s latest disturbing documentary is being compared to a ‘real life Handmaid’s Tale‘ by viewers.

There’s just something about a really great documentary that makes it impossible to tear your eyes away from it.

Sure, there are great dramas and comedies out there – but content that’s actually real does just feel a little more… well, real.

Netflix has been knocking it out of the park lately, with some seriously intriguing documentaries.

Take the one that’s being dubbed a ‘real life Gone Girl‘, the true crime tale that needs to be seen to be believed, or the family story that’s truly heartbreaking, for example.

But now, one documentary series that’s being compared to The Handmaid’s Tale is being branded the platform’s most disturbing ever…

The documentary in question tells the story of a terrifying cult that was founded on principles of child s**ual abuse.

Netflix’s official synopsis reads: “In 2008, a dramatic raid at the Yearning for Zion Ranch in West Texas generated attention around the world, as law enforcement agents uncovered stunning evidence of s**ual, physical and psychological abuse and took 400+ children into custody.

“The series gives viewers an in-depth look into the secretive sect (FLDS) and the rise of self-professed prophet Warren Jeffs.

“From forced underage marriage and pregnancy to a complete unravelling into an oppressive criminal cult under Warren Jeffs’ rule, the story uncovers extraordinary bravery battling tyrannical control in modern America.”

And since it hit screens, fans have been left feeling truly shaken up by the vile acts depicted.

One user says: “I watched last night and cannot get it out of my noggin. We’re literally living in The Handmaid’s Tale.”

Another agrees: “This documentary on Netflix feels like Handmaid’s Tale lite.”

While a third calls the documentary ‘actually terrifying. How many other churches use God to scare people into doing ABSURD things?’.

Another viewer writes on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Not many things shock me, f*** me probably one of the most disturbing things I’ve watched.”

The documentary in question is called Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey.

It comprises four episodes, and contains heartbreaking real testimonials and ‘harrowing personal stories of some of the courageous women and men who escaped’.

The documentary also features never-before-seen archival footage from inside the highly private sect.

Alongside acclaim from Netflix viewers, the series has also gained critical success.

Joel Keller writes for Decider: “STREAM IT. If you want insight into a closed society that is only known via blaring headlines, then watch Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey. Just be ready for a narrative that will make you uncomfortable and angry at the same time.”
