The popular Japanese singer and actress was tragically found unresponsive in her bathtub, according to multiple reports.
Nakayama had originally been scheduled to perform a Christmas show in Osaka on Friday (December 6), but cancelled her appearance, citing poor health, BBC News reports.
After the star failed to show up to the venue, a co-worker went to check on her and that’s when they reportedly discovered Nakayama’s lifeless body in the bathroom.
Nakayama’s co-worker immediately called the emergency services, but sadly, upon arrival, there was nothing they could do to save the star.

Her death was confirmed at the scene and it is now being investigated by local authorities.
Since the tragic news broke, people have been talking about her last social media post in the hopes that it will give them some clues about the 54-year-old’s passing.
Nakayam’s last post on Instagram saw her post a shot of a modern art exhibition in Tokyo that she said she had attended in the days leading up to the tragic incident.
It shows a piece of work curated by French artist Louise Bourgeois with the words “I have been to hell and back” embroidered on it before going on to say: “And let me tell you, it was wonderful.”
The J-Pop star then referenced her own mental health in the caption of the post, which was only uploaded a few days ago.
“I was so depressed/overwhelmed for a few days that I could only talk to the friend I went with,” she wrote (translated), before adding: “I’m bad at photography but I can’t express it for anything even if I’m good.”
According to further reports, The Metropolitan Police Department has stated that there is a possibility the singer may have drowned or her death may have been an accident due to illness or related causes.
The cause of her death is still under investigation, as of this writing.
A statement published by her agency on her website confirmed her tragic death.
“It is with deepest regret that we have to make this sudden announcement to all those who have been involved with [Nakayama’s career] and to the fans who have supported her, but it has happened so suddenly that we are also stunned and saddened by the news,” the statement read, per The Guardian.
“We are still in the process of confirming the cause of death and other details.”
