A Photograph That Became a Symbol of 9/11

On September 11, 2001, photographer Richard Drew captured a series of photographs showing a man falling from the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

One of those images became known around the world as “The Falling Man.”

The photograph was deeply disturbing to many people because it showed one person’s final moments during one of the darkest days in modern American history.

Almost 3,000 people were killed in the attacks, and many victims’ final moments were never known.

The Search for His Identity

For years, people tried to determine who the man in the photograph was.

One early theory identified him as Norberto Hernandez, a worker at the Windows on the World restaurant. His family, however, later rejected that identification after examining the photographs and comparing the man’s clothing and appearance with Hernandez.

The search eventually turned toward another Windows on the World employee: Jonathan Briley.

The Tiny Detail That Changed the Investigation

A key clue came from the fact that Drew’s camera captured several photographs of the man in quick succession.

In one of those images, the man’s outer shirt moved during the fall, revealing a bright orange T-shirt underneath.

That small detail became important.

Briley, a 43-year-old sound engineer who worked at Windows on the World, was known to wear an orange shirt beneath his work clothing. His family members and people who knew him also noted similarities in his height, body shape and clothing.

Why the Identity Is Still Not Certain

Although the evidence points toward Briley, the identification has never been officially proven.

His sister, Gwen Briley-Strand, has said that she believes the photograph may represent more than just one person. She has viewed the image as a symbol of the thousands of people who lost their lives that day.

The photographer Richard Drew has also described the image as something that came to represent the victims and the people who watched the tragedy unfold.

A Photograph That Still Carries a Powerful Meaning

The “Falling Man” photograph remains one of the most recognizable and painful images connected to 9/11.

Whether the man was definitively Jonathan Briley or not, the photograph has come to represent the human cost of the attacks.
