North Korea Addresses Rumors Kim Jong-un Is Dead

· Sonie Fanie

North Korea has released new photographs of Kim Jong-un after claims spread online that the country’s leader had died following a brain hemorrhage.

The images, published by North Korean state media on Tuesday, October 20, appear to show Kim visiting a clothing and footwear exhibition alongside his daughter, Kim Ju-ae.

The announcement came after social media posts alleged that the dictator had fallen into a coma and died after receiving medical treatment in China.

However, North Korea has not directly addressed the death rumors, and independent journalists have not verified the photographs or the circumstances surrounding the reported visit.

According to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency, the country’s diplomatic and security officials said they had heard nothing to support the allegations.

The latest photographs have nevertheless renewed attention on Kim’s health and revived memories of previous occasions when his absence from public view triggered similar speculation.

Kim Jong-un appears in new photographs

North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that Kim visited a garment and footwear exhibition in Pyongyang on Monday, October 19.

The photographs released the following day appear to show Kim inspecting clothing and shoes while accompanied by his daughter, Kim Ju-ae.

However, the images have not been independently authenticated.

International journalists did not receive independent access to the event, and the available evidence does not establish when the photographs were taken beyond North Korea’s official account.

The release followed claims by Wanjun Xie, a Chinese dissident based in the United States, who alleged on social media that Kim had suffered a severe brain hemorrhage, lost consciousness and died after being transferred to a hospital in Beijing.

Xie also claimed that authorities had secretly returned Kim’s body to North Korea and concealed his death.

However, no evidence has substantiated these allegations.

In its October 20 report, Yonhap News Agency confirmed that North Korean state media had reported Kim’s exhibition visit but had not directly addressed the speculation surrounding his health.

South Korean diplomatic and security officials also told Yonhap that they had heard nothing to support the claims.

The reported visit provides a significant counterpoint to the online rumors, but the photographs alone cannot establish Kim’s precise medical condition or independently verify the timing of his appearance.

Kim Jong-un’s 2020 disappearance sparked similar rumors

The latest speculation echoes an episode in April 2020, when Kim disappeared from public view for approximately three weeks and prompted international concern about his health.

Kim missed an annual ceremony on April 15 marking the birthday of his grandfather, Kim Il-sung, North Korea’s founding leader. His absence attracted attention because the occasion holds considerable significance in the country.

Reports subsequently suggested that Kim had undergone heart surgery and was recovering from a serious medical procedure. Some speculation went further, questioning whether he remained alive.

However, South Korean officials urged caution over the reports.

According to Yonhap News Agency, South Korea’s National Intelligence Service told lawmakers on May 6, 2020, that it had found no evidence Kim had undergone heart surgery or a related medical procedure.

The agency also said his reduced number of public appearances that year could reflect his focus on domestic affairs and the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak.

North Korean state media then reported that Kim had attended a ceremony marking the completion of a fertilizer factory in Sunchon. KCNA published photographs showing him participating in the event on May 1, which state media reported the following day.

The appearance ended his 20-day absence from public view and undermined speculation that he had died or become seriously ill.

Yonhap‘s reporting at the time highlighted the difficulties of establishing reliable information about North Korea’s leadership when officials provide limited details about their activities.

The episode offers an important comparison with the current rumors, although it does not establish whether Kim has experienced any health problems in the intervening years.

Why Kim Jong-un’s health continues to attract attention

Kim inherited leadership of North Korea in December 2011 following the death of his father, Kim Jong-il. Since then, he has maintained tight control over the country and overseen the development of its nuclear weapons program.

His health has attracted international scrutiny partly because North Korea rarely provides detailed information about his medical condition.

His absences from public view have repeatedly generated speculation, particularly when state media goes days or weeks without reporting on his activities.

However, an absence from public appearances does not establish that a leader has become seriously ill. Similarly, photographs showing a public engagement cannot provide a comprehensive assessment of someone’s health.

These limitations make it difficult for outside observers to separate reliable information from speculation.

Kim’s family has also attracted attention because of questions about North Korea’s future leadership.

His sister, Kim Yo-jong, has emerged as a prominent political figure and has made public statements on behalf of the regime. Her position has prompted discussion about the country’s potential succession arrangements.

Meanwhile, Kim’s daughter, Kim Ju-ae, has accompanied him at several high-profile events, attracting attention from observers examining the family’s future.

However, neither development confirms that a succession process has begun or that Kim has become unable to govern.

The recent death rumors have also prompted speculation that Kim Yo-jong has assumed power. Yonhap reported that these claims circulated alongside the allegations about Kim’s supposed brain hemorrhage, but neither claim came with verifiable supporting evidence.

For now, the available reporting does not establish that Kim has suffered the alleged medical emergency or that North Korea has experienced a leadership change.

What North Korea’s latest announcement really means

The photographs have renewed attention on Kim’s whereabouts, but the distinction between North Korea’s official account and independently verified facts remains crucial.

KCNA reported that Kim visited the clothing and footwear exhibition on Monday, October 19. Its photographs appear to show him inspecting the displays alongside his daughter.

However, North Korea has not issued a direct denial of the death rumors, according to Yonhap’s October 20 report. Instead, state media published an account of Kim’s reported activities shortly after the allegations circulated online.

South Korean diplomatic and security officials told Yonhap they had heard nothing to support the claims that Kim had died.

The allegations about a brain hemorrhage, a coma and treatment in Beijing remain unsubstantiated. No reliable evidence cited in the reporting establishes that these events occurred.

The photographs also cannot independently confirm Kim’s medical condition, and journalists have not authenticated when the images were taken.

The distinction is important because the latest development does not amount to independent confirmation of every detail surrounding Kim’s health.

It establishes that North Korean state media has reported a recent public appearance, while the death claims remain unsupported.

Kim’s 2020 disappearance demonstrated how quickly speculation can intensify when he stays out of public view. His subsequent appearance at the fertilizer factory undermined the rumors circulating at the time.

The latest episode follows a similar pattern, but observers should avoid treating historical comparisons as proof of what has happened now.

For the moment, North Korea’s official account places Kim at an exhibition on Monday, while South Korean officials have reported no information supporting the death allegations.

Until independently verifiable evidence emerges, claims that Kim Jong-un has died should be treated as unconfirmed rumors rather than established fact.
