The answer cannot be timid or solitary. Competing outlets have to stand shoulder to shoulder, refusing access-for-obedience deals, sharing legal firepower, and publishing together when one of them is targeted. Local reporters and national giants alike must act as one nervous system. A president can threaten to “change” the press. The Constitution says the press exists to change presidents — and that line is not up for negotiation.
