Helwani has followed up on UFC’s statement after the pre-fight press event between McGregor and Chandler was cancelled.
Ariel Helwani has given an update after a planned event involving Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler was cancelled ahead of their UFC 303 fight.
McGregor is due to make his UFC return after a near three-year absence on June 29, where he will settle a grudge match against Chandler.
Ahead of their welterweight fight, the pair were due to come face-to-face at a press event on Monday.
The event was due to be held at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland, but was surprisingly postponed at short notice this morning.
In a statement, the UFC confirmed: “Dear UFC Fans — The UFC 303 press conference scheduled for Monday June 3rd in Dublin, Ireland at 3Arena has been postponed until further notice.
“We sincerely apologise to all the fans who were planning to attend. When we have further information on a new date and time, we will share it immediately. Thank you.”
Now, Helwani has given an update on the cancellation – confirming that the decision was taken before Chandler flew out to the venue.
He took to Twitter to write: “Today’s UFC 303 presser in Dublin feat. Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler has been postponed. No word just yet as to why.
“Luckily for Chandler, he found out yesterday [Sunday] am it was off, just before he was set to fly out there, I’m told.”
Neither fighter has yet commented on the press conference postponement – although Chandler has continued to promote the UFC 303 fight on his social media accounts.
It is claimed, as per MMA Orbit, that any fans who bought tickets for the original event can re-use them once a rescheduled date is officially announced.
UFC 303 will take place from the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada, with McGregor vs Chandler assigned as the main event.
The Irishman posted footage of himself in training prior to the fight – and it has got fans talking.
