Extreme Eater Dies From Overeating During Mukbang Livestream

A well-known streamer in China tragically passed away due to overeating while broadcasting live to her audience.

Streamer Pan Xiaoting was only 24 years old when she died on July 14, during one of her regular livestreams for her followers.

Xiaoting entertained her audience with mukbang, a type of content where creators post videos of themselves eating large amounts of food, often opting for excessive or particularly unhealthy choices.

Before her untimely death, Xiaoting had participated in extreme eating challenges.

These challenges included consuming food for more than 10 hours each day without any breaks, as reported by local media.

Another challenge she undertook involved consuming more than 10kg of food in a single meal.

Xiaoting had previously been hospitalized after such overeating sessions led to gastric bleeding, though she had been discharged after treatment.

In her last livestream, it is believed that her overeating directly contributed to her death.

The Maeil Business Newspaper reported that an autopsy performed after Xiaoting’s death revealed her stomach was full of undigested food and that her abdomen was severely deformed.

This incident occurred after China had already banned mukbang videos in 2020.

The ban was part of an effort to curb overeating and food waste, following China’s leader Xi Jinping’s labeling of waste as “shameful.”

Subsequently, the country introduced fines for food service operators who encourage or deceive consumers into ordering excessive meals, leading to obvious waste.

Those found in violation of these regulations could face fines of up to 10,000 yuan ($1,376).

In an interview with ABC News, nutritionist Maya Feller expressed concerns about the pressures faced by mukbang creators.

She noted, “I do think there’s a significant amount of pressure for these creators who are sitting there eating day after day and have millions of views and followers to actually replicate that behavior.

“And that, in my opinion, is more where the danger lies, is that they’ve got to do it over and over again.”

While overeating is something many of us might do during holidays or special occasions, it does carry potential health risks.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, consequences of overeating include stomach pain, heartburn, and acid reflux, among other symptoms.

The clinic recommends several measures to help prevent overeating.

These include staying active, ensuring adequate sleep, limiting alcohol intake, and avoiding salty foods.

Additionally, eating slowly and filling your plate with more vegetables can also help manage overeating.
