Brazilian Influencers Tragically Drown After ‘Refusing Life Jackets’ To Avoid ‘Ruining Their Selfies’

Two popular influencers drowned in a heartbreaking incident after they reportedly refused to wear lifejackets, and their overcrowded boat sank.

Authorities confirmed that Aline Tamara Moreira de Amorim, 37, and Beatriz Tavares da Silva Faria, 27, died after the yacht they were on capsized near Devil’s Throat, a coastal area known for its rugged beauty, last month.

The two women were enjoying a day out on the sea in Brazil with a larger group, taking selfies and savoring the scenic experience.

As the investigation continues, it appears the boat may have been overloaded as it headed back from the party.

Sao Vincente police commissioner Marcos Alexandre Alfino shared with the media that some passengers opted not to wear lifejackets, reportedly because they felt the jackets would interfere with their photos.

He commented, “Some didn’t want to put them on because they were taking selfies.”

“They said that they get in the way of their tanning.”

The skipper of the boat, whose identity has not been disclosed, has been cooperating fully with the authorities, providing detailed accounts of what happened.

He reportedly made every effort to try and rescue the influencers when the boat began to sink.

The captain, who was among the five survivors, said he had been directed to take six influencers back to shore, even though his boat had a maximum capacity for only five people.

Other survivors included Vanessa Audrey da Silva, Camila Alves de Carvalho, Daniel Goncalves Ferreira, Gabriela Santos Lima, and Natan Cardoso Soares da Silva, who managed to survive the devastating incident.

According to reports, on September 29, a powerful wave struck the boat, causing it to sink under the combined weight of the passengers.

Reports indicate that Beatriz’s body was discovered first, retrieved by Maritime Firefighters as it drifted out in the sea.

However, Aline’s body wasn’t located until a week later when it washed up on Itaquitanduva Beach.

Authorities are now examining whether this tragic incident could have been avoided.

Commissioner Alfino stated, “All this is being determined very calmly to conclude if the fatalities were based on recklessness or negligence.”

Aline was a mother to a young child and was unable to swim. Her last post on social media was taken on the very boat that would later sink.

Vanessa, a fellow influencer who survived, later shared with local reporters that the group had gathered for a party on a luxury yacht, where they spent time drinking and celebrating.

As the group prepared to leave, they split up into two boats for the journey back.

Vanessa, who was aboard the boat hit by the wave, survived by quickly finding a lifejacket and clinging to nearby rocks to keep from drowning.

She recounted, “There was a moment in the water when no one could see anyone. I was fighting for life.”

Another survivor, Camila, said she held onto a lifejacket with all her strength.

She described the terrifying ordeal, saying, “There were very strong waves, we almost died. We didn’t know how to swim. I knew that I couldn’t take it for long. I hurt my foot and swallowed a lot of water.”

“We threw ourselves into the rocks.”
