Teen Bought A Totaled Tesla For $15,000 And Uncovered A Huge Surprise From The Car’s Built-In Computer

Stories like this really make me wonder why I didn’t spend my childhood learning something useful, instead of just playing video games all the time.Well, those days are behind me now, and what do I have to show for it? Not much, except maybe the satisfaction of one day beating my son in Call of Duty when he’s old enough.

But a brilliant teenager, only known as Winston, used his younger years much more wisely. He became quite the mechanic, focusing specifically on electric vehicles.

The story of how 18-year-old Winston rebuilt a 2018 Tesla Model 3 was shared on the popular YouTube channel Wham Baam Teslacam.Talking about Winston’s project, the host said: “Winston purchased this totaled Model 3 from a wrecking yard and rebuilt it himself in his garage.”

“Once the car was completely rebuilt he plugged in his USB drive and retrieved the footage stored locally on the Tesla’s computer finally revealing how the car had been totaled.”

The 2018 Tesla Model 3 was restored to its former glory by an 18-year-old

“The footage shows the former owner driving along when another car suddenly appeared from the right with no opportunity to stop.”The host continued, adding: “The Tesla driver T-boned the other driver on the driver’s side, the Tesla was a total loss and was sold to Winston by Geico Insurance – Winston won the auction for $15,000 before setting out to build the cheapest Tesla in the US.”

However, it wasn’t Winston’s car. He was actually working on the Tesla for his parents, deciding to restore it for them.

He explained a bit more on his own YouTube channel, WinstonsGarage. His bio read: “I rebuilt a Tesla Model 3 for my parents and we have been driving it for a couple months now! I hope to one day bring another Tesla onto the channel and rebuild it but we will see.”

With his skills, you’d think Winston would be on Elon Musk’s radar if Tesla ever needed an intern, right? Well, Winston has applied, so we’ll have to wait and see!

In any case, the footage of the crash certainly surprised the young man, but that didn’t stop him from bringing the car back to life.

Winston shared how he spent around $25,000 on the entire project, including $15,000 for buying the car itself and another $9,000 on parts. The last $1,000 went to taxes.

This meant he saved his parents quite a bit of money, as it turned out to be $27,000 less than the cost of a brand new Model 3, which would have been around $52,000.
