Recently, a bizarre sea creature that looks like something from a horror movie washed up on a beach in Southern California. Its creepy appearance was so shocking that the pictures shared on Reddit were labeled as not safe for work.
The person who posted the images found the dead animal near Dana Point, California. This detail, along with the clear photos, helped people figure out what the strange creature was.
Tim Daly, a spokesperson for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, told SFGATE that he agreed with most of the comments on Reddit identifying the strange, bloated animal.
It’s probably a dead moray eel, although this one seems a bit faded from being dead.
Moray eels are usually found in the waters off Southern California, where they live among reefs in shallow areas. While they aren’t poisonous and aren’t known to be very aggressive, it’s still a good idea to keep your distance. If they feel threatened, they can bite and use their two rows of sharp teeth to hold on.
Redditors who helped identify the eel took much joy in responding to the original post.
