Suri Cruise discretely changing her name to drop her father’s last name is only one of the many things she can do since she turned 18. Among others, the daughter of famous celebrities Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes can also legally talk about her estranged relationship with her father.
Suri Cruise, the daughter of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, recently celebrated her 18th birthday by making a big change to her name. She decided to drop her dad’s last name.
This exciting news came out when she performed in the musical “Head Over Heels” in New York. In the show, she played the role of Princess Philoclea, a character that was originally played by Alexandra Socha on Broadway.
On the casting sheet for the high school production, she was listed as Suri Noelle. This new name shows her choice to take her mom’s middle name, since Katie Holmes’ full name is Kate Noelle Holmes.
After the news about her choice came out, Suri was seen casually walking around New York City. She wore a pink shirt and white pants, listening to music with her earphones to block out the sounds around her.
Changing her name is a big shift from what is on her birth certificate. That document shows she was born as Suri Cruise, taking her dad’s well-known last name.
Filed with the Los Angeles County Register-Recorder/County Clerk on May 8, 2006, the certificate itself has several peculiarities. Notably, Suri was born on April 18, yet the document wasn’t filed until 20 days later, on May 8.
This delay was strange because St. John’s Hospital usually submits birth certificates within ten days after a baby is born. The hospital explained that the hold-up happened because there wasn’t a parent or someone chosen to sign the certificate. What’s interesting is that a person labeled as a “friend” ended up signing it, but their signature is hard to read.
Another unusual occurrence is, Anne Heffernan, RNC, the “Attendant or Certifier’s” signature. Anne was not present in the delivery room, nor did she see the baby.
However, hospital representatives clarified that although it is standard for the attending doctor to sign, it is not mandatory. Heffernan was authorized to sign in the doctor’s absence.
Now that Suri Noelle is 18, she is officially an adult, which means she can do more than just change her name. She can also share her thoughts about personal issues, like her relationship with her dad and his beliefs in Scientology.
Tony Ortega, who has studied Scientology for many years, mentioned, “Suri couldn’t have signed any contracts before, but now she can speak out if she wants to, and it will be really fascinating to hear what she has to say.” He also pointed out that one reason Katie left when Suri was six was that she didn’t want Suri to see what Tom’s other kids, Isabella and Connor, experienced because of Scientology.
However, only time can tell if Suri is willing to open up about her personal life to the public. Born to famous A-list parents, she is aware of what people already know about her connection with her father.
Over the past years, Suri’s estranged relationship with Tom has been no secret. Up until her coming of age, the father and daughter remained distant, with Tom filming “Mission Impossible 8” thousands of miles away from Suri, who celebrated her birthday in the US.
We earlier shared news about Tom being spotted in London and Suri having a party in New York. The 61-year-old actor was seen in the pilot seat of a helicopter, which is one of his favorite ways to travel, and he had a big smile on his face. However, his recent look got a lot of reactions from people online.
“OMG. My all-time favorite Mr. Tom Cruise looks like a grandpa now! ,” a Facebook user commented. “Wow! I didn’t even recognize him…,” said another person. “This picture doesn’t really look like him…,” someone else agreed. Another comment was, “Wow, he looks different.” Some folks also pointed out something else about Tom’s look, saying, “That hair color makes him seem older.”
Suri, who lives in New York with her mom, was seen celebrating her birthday. The actor’s youngest daughter, who doesn’t have a close relationship with her dad, was out with a friend in the city. She was holding a gift and wearing a denim jacket with matching bootcut jeans. Despite the rainy weather, she also had a pink umbrella in her hand.
When people on social media saw Suri, they had a lot to say. Many commenters pointed out how much she looks like her mom, Katie.
“Such a beautiful girl, just like her mom!” one user wrote. “Absolutely gorgeous! She’s a mini version of her mom,” another person agreed. “Wow, she’s basically her mom’s twin!” someone else commented. “I thought this was her mom at first! ,” another user added.
Others noticed Suri’s umbrella for different reasons. “She doesn’t need much for a great birthday—just friends, an umbrella, and the rest will come! She’s growing up strong like her mom!” one user said. “Why does she have an umbrella for a four-year-old?” another person questioned.
Suri’s fashion sense didn’t go unnoticed either, as an Instagrammer wrote, “What is she wearing??? … I see she got her fashion sense from her mom …”
Days after her birthday, Suri was again spotted with her mom. The two dressed laid back while grabbing a cup of coffee. Their chic outfits were even highlighted by Vogue’s Twitter, with the magazine suggesting the duo star in a Chloé campaign.
Suri and her mother, Katie, share an unmistakable and profound bond, nurtured through years of being together. Their relationship exemplifies a deep and enduring mother-daughter connection.
Katie has always been protective of Suri. In 2017, she stated that her child was the most important person to her, emphasizing that her upbringing was paramount to her work at the time. She shared the importance of being present for her child and giving her a stable, innocent childhood.
Katie felt blessed to do what she did in her career, but she believed that nothing in the world was better than watching her child succeed. The actress endeavored to cherish Suri’s childhood while it lasted.
Katie realized that it was both happy and sad to see kids becoming more independent as they grew up. Even though it made her a little sad to think about them leaving one day, she wanted to make sure Suri had everything she needed before starting her own journey.
When Suri was 14, actress Leah Remini believed that Tom intended to wait until his daughter was older to introduce her to Scientology. According to Leah, Scientology viewed Katie as a suppressive person, an enemy.
Tom thought that Katie wouldn’t be able to have a good relationship with Suri. Leah also mentioned that Tom might want to bring Suri into Scientology as she got older, which could make her drift away from her mom.
Leah was shocked when she heard that Katie broke up with Tom in 2012. She remembered how much Katie was involved in Tom’s Scientology life. Still, Leah praised Katie for putting her daughter’s happiness first.
Leah mentioned that there could be a deal to protect Suri. She also expressed her admiration for Katie Holmes for taking her daughter away from a situation that might have been bad for both Suri and their relationship.
Mike Rinder, a former spokesperson for Scientology, shared his thoughts about the future. He hasn’t seen his two oldest kids since he left the group. He said, “Suri is not a Scientologist and she never will be… she deserves love and support.”
Katie has given her daughter so much love and support throughout the years, especially after a tough childhood caused by her parents’ divorce. Soon, Suri will be able to create her own future and make her own decisions as she steps into adulthood.
