An influencer broke down in tears after strangers refused her offer to pay for their food shop.
Amid the current cost of living crisis, saving money where possible is a priority for millions of people.
And with the weekly food shop being one of the most expensive necessities, you’d think you’d be happy for someone to pay for it for you.
But one social media star has found out that this isn’t always the case.
TikTok influencer Amelia Goldsmith has gone viral after her plan to pay for a stranger’s food shop backfired.
She had gone into a Sainsbury’s in London, hoping to surprise a lucky customer and cheer them up by paying for their groceries.
Goldsmith admitted that she was ‘nervous’ and hoped she wouldn’t come across as a ‘weirdo’.
And let’s just say things did not go according to plan, leaving Goldsmith in tears.
One commenter writes: “I think people know you’re recording them and doing it to go online. Seems ungenuine and people can sense it straight away.”
Another agrees: “I personally wouldn’t like it either, the filming puts me off but also I’d think, ‘Oh, do I look like I’m poor’.”
Goldsmith tells the camera: “That was stressful, guys. That was really stressful.
“I was expecting the first person to be, like, overjoyed and grateful and happy for me to pay for their shopping, but obviously that didn’t go down well.”
She continues: “Weird turnout. But I’m still really happy that the food can go to those who really need it.
“But I’m just really overwhelmed right now. I don’t know what’s going on.
“Also, that was a big challenge for me because I just find social situations really quite hard.
“Especially stuff like that where I’m bringing a lot of attention to myself.”
The TikToker’s giveaway didn’t go to plan, as every shopper she approached turned down her offer.
“There’s a lot more deserving people in the world but thank you,” one woman told her during her stunt. “I feel too guilty for taking it.”
Eventually, Goldsmith decided to fill up a basket with pasta and sauces and donate it to the food bank instead.
When she left the supermarket, the content creator admitted that she wasn’t expecting to be rejected and struggled to hold back tears.
Viewers have reassured Goldsmith that there will be a few different reasons for why the customers rejected her offer.
For example, she went into a Sainsbury’s in Balham, a more affluent part of London, where people are less likely to need help paying for their shopping.
“I think you went to the wrong type of shop if you know what I mean,” writes one viewer.
Others note the fact that Goldsmith was filming while offering to pay for a stranger’s shopping, which might have put them off.
Goldsmith adds in the video’s caption that she can now see why people didn’t take her up on her offer.
She says: “In hindsight, I can see why people can react differently to this, but my intentions were purely to brighten up someone’s day.
“I’m still super happy with what I ended up doing, and I’ll do more of it for sure.”
