Failed Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams mumbled nervously during an interview with MSNBC host Chris Hayes as she attempted to explain the reason why her nonprofit organization received a massive $2 billion grant from the Biden administration.
As background, former President Joe Biden introduced several big rules that impacted the use of home appliances during his term. The rules were designed to target efficiency standards, with the end goal being to save consumers cash and reduce pollution over the course of several years. As part of that, Abrams’ organization got the massive grant from Biden to provide new, more efficient appliances to needy Americans. The amount she received to do so was shocking, as was the fact that her organization had brought in no real donations before receiving the tidal wave of money from Biden.
Hayes kicked off the interview by asking if the point of the program from Abrams’ organization was designed to help lower costs for people. Abrams responded in the affirmative. Hayes then played a clip of President Donald Trump during his State of the Union address in February 2026, saying, “I’m going to play what he had to say, and I’m going to ask you to explain what the program is, that was such an obvious, ludicrous laugh line for the Republicans there. Take a listen.”
The clip featured the president saying, “$1.9 billion to recently created decarbonization of homes committee headed up, and we know she’s involved, just at the last moment, the money was passed over by a woman named Stacey Abrams.”
The video clip of the interview then cuts back to Hayes and Abrams. Hayes asked Abrams to provide an explanation about the organization, what her relationship to it was, and what it did to help lower costs for Americans. “In 2023 and 2024 I led a program called Vitalizing DeSoto. We worked in a tiny town in South Georgia to demonstrate that by replacing energy-inefficient appliances with efficient appliances, you can lower your costs,” Abrams haltingly responded.
The failed gubernatorial candidate then provided an example of how the program helped to reduce a woman’s energy bill. “Right now we have one woman who saw her elective bill cut in half from $180 to $98 that’s what we delivered. And based on that program, a coalition of organizations, famous organizations, came together and said to the EPA, if we can do this here, we can do this for millions more Americans.” Unexplained was why $2 billion was needed to be spent to save people $98.
In any case, the next bit of her explanation consisted of Abrams stumbling over her words nervously as she struggled to articulate why her organization received the grant. “And based on that program, a coalition of organizations, famous organizations, came together and said to the EPA, if we can do this here, we can do this for millions more Americans. Let us invest the money of America in lowering the cost for Americans. And the EPA said, okay, great, go for it.”
A post featuring the video clip included a caption that pointed out the strange nervousness displayed by Abrams and asked questions about how big this “small town” is to justify $2 billion needed for poor people to have appliances. “#StaceyAbrams strikes me as terribly nervous as she stumbles through her ridiculous explanation as to why her organization was awarded $2 billion dollars to purchase new appliances for poor people”
“How big was this small town? Who supplied the appliances and at what cost? How much was she paid? Inquiring minds wanna know,” the post continued. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin also ripped into Abrams on social media, claiming that she obscured the grant. “Stacey Abrams-linked Power Forward Communities received $2 billion in tax dollars in 2024 after reporting just $100 in revenue the year before,” he wrote, according to News Channel 9. “They were so unqualified that the grant agreement required the NGO to complete ‘How to Develop a Budget’ training within 90 days.”
