If, like me, you’re wondering what on earth a Goomba is then you’re in good company.
FYI, they’re the small brown creatures that are usually one of the first enemies to appear in Super Mario Bros.
It turns out that they’re not actually just little ‘blob’ men with fang teeth and people are just realizing what they really are.
Goomba is a character in Super Mario Bros (Nintendo)
One Super Mario fan took to Reddit to share their shock about the true identity of the Goombas.
Sharing an image of the character, who moves slowly on two legs and is easy to defeat, the user wrote in a post: “I’m stupid.
“I only just realized that Goombas are walking Mushrooms.”
That’s right, it turns out that the small characters who Mario has to stomp on to defeat are actually meant to resemble brown mushrooms.
And the original poster wasn’t the only one who was shocked to uncover this little-known video game fact.
Others took to the comment section to share their reactions to the news, with many having only just found out themselves.
One user wrote: “I literally just figured this out because I started playing Super Mario RPG for the first time and Toad cries for help because a ‘mushroom’ is attacking him and it turns out to be a goomba.”
Goomba isn’t the only mushroom-like character in Super Mario Bros (Nintendo)
Another said: “Lmao. As a 40-something, who has played almost all Mario games ever created, owned every Nintendo home system since the NES, and turned off the system after discovering the warp-zone in world 1-2 of Super Mario Bros. because I didn’t know what to do… I also just learned this.”
And a third person joked: “Just wait until you figure out that Mario travels through pipes…. Because he’s a plumber!!”
Some users had their own theories on what the characters could be, with one arguing: “Nah bro they’re muffins.”
Others had some less pleasant suggestions, with one writing, ‘Bowser turds’ and another saying, ‘bunch of angry short d***s’.
But it turns out they are mushrooms and they’re not the only fungus-based species in the game, with Toad, Amanita, Spook and Shroob all being based on mushroom-like creatures.
And that’s not all – the world that Mario is in as he completes levels to try to save Princess Peach is called the Mushroom Kingdom.
Bowser rules over the kingdom as the tyrannical king of the Koopas, which are the turtle-like creatures that act as another enemy of Mario.
