Unique Senate Nod: LaCour Becomes Alabama Federal Judge – Horizonpress

The U.S. Senate has confirmed Edmund “Eddie” LaCour Jr. as a federal judge for the Northern District of Alabama. The 51-47 vote fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Chief Judge L. Scott Coogler.

LaCour served as Alabama’s Solicitor General beginning in 2019. In that role, he led significant appellate litigation, including the *Allen v. Milligan* case, and presented arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court on three occasions.

A graduate of Yale Law School, LaCour also holds a master’s degree from Trinity College Dublin. His legal career includes clerking for Judge William H. Pryor Jr. on the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals.

He later worked in private practice before joining the Alabama Attorney General’s office. Over his career, he has authored more than one hundred legal briefs in state and federal courts.

A previous nomination in 2020 was unsuccessful. His recent confirmation was bolstered by support from Alabama Senators Katie Britt and Tommy Tuberville, which facilitated a smoother Senate process.

LaCour’s appointment follows other recent judicial confirmations for Alabama, including Bill Lewis and Hal Mooty. It adds a deeply experienced lawyer to the federal bench.

He now assumes his duties, bringing his extensive background in appellate law to shape the Northern District of Alabama’s legal landscape for the foreseeable future.
