Ashton Kutcher Says His Good Looks Have Actually Hurt His Acting Career
In Hollywood, appearance can often play a major part in landing roles, since audiences connect to what they see on screen. That’s part of the business — and while talent matters, looks can often open doors or close them just as quickly.
It’s a reality most actors are aware of. Many might hope their looks help them get noticed, but as Kutcher pointed out, there’s another side to it that can make things far more complicated.
Before anyone writes off his comments as a humblebrag or self-pity, the 47-year-old actor made it clear that he’s also benefited from his appearance. He knows it’s given him opportunities that others might not have had.
On October 11, Kutcher appeared at New York Comic Con, where he spoke about an upcoming project that he’s especially excited about and how it ties into this ongoing struggle.
He went on to explain that he’s often been passed over for deeper, more emotionally heavy roles — especially characters who are struggling or rough around the edges — simply because of how he looks.
Kutcher shared that his upcoming TV series, The Beauty, set to release in 2026, gave him a more layered and challenging part to play. He said working on it helped him see casting choices from a new perspective and understand the process much better.
The new Hulu show centers around a strange sexually transmitted disease that makes those infected unnaturally beautiful — but at a deadly cost. The story follows a group of people trying to uncover what’s really happening, eventually getting caught up in a dark government conspiracy.
Talking about his character, Kutcher said: “Without giving away too much, almost every one of us has an incredibly nuanced role where, in some way, shape or form, we’re playing something that we are or we aren’t at any given time.”
He shared that the series has given him one of the most rewarding experiences of his acting career, describing the role as “one of the great delights” he’s ever had.
The Beauty is expected to premiere on Hulu sometime in 2026, marking what could be one of Kutcher’s most complex performances yet.
