Musician Phil Collins has issued a sad health update after noting he is ‘very sick.’
The Genesis frontman has spoken out about his health after the 74-year-old’s final concert in 2022.
He has generally stepped away from public life in recent years, after revealing in 2022 that his health was declining.
The musician can no longer play the drums due to suffering from a dislocated vertebrae and nerve damage, which require the use of a cane.
But the Grammy-winning artist’s son stepped into playing the drums for him during some of his final gigs, as he was unable to play his beloved instrument.
The star shares his son, Nic, with his ex-wife Orianne Cevey.
Fans were devastated when rumors of Collins’ declining health circulated, as many reported that the drummer was being looked after in a hospice.
Instead, he is currently in hospital receiving treatment for his knee.
But the artist spoke out in his 2024 documentary about losing his love for creating music following his health battle.
He said: “I’ve spent all my life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock.
“If I can’t do what I did as well as I did it, I’d rather relax and not do anything. If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I’ll have a crack at it.
“But I just feel like I’ve used up my air miles.”
Joking with the crowd during his final show, he noted: “After tonight, we’ve all got to get real jobs.”
Just prior to the release of his documentary last year, Collins further opened up about his health in 2022.
The artist said: “I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens.
“But I’m not hungry for it anymore. The thing is, I’ve been sick, I mean very sick.”
His 1985 album ‘No Jacket Required’ won the Grammy for Album of the Year.
“It’s still kind of sinking in a bit,” he added.
The star also suffers from acute pancreatitis, where the pancreas becomes inflamed and swollen.
Collins additionally suffers from ‘foot drop,’ which sees him now wearing orthopaedic shoes.
The 74-year-old is the father of five children, including Emily In Paris star Lily Collins.
Fans of the singer have posted their well wishes on social media.
One noted: “His health has been failing for a while now. This isn’t surprising really.
“He hasn’t been able to play the drums since 2010 or so. Multiple back and neck surgeries have left him needing a cane to walk, and, like Ozzy, he’s had to sit in a chair while performing.”
Another said: “I LOVE Phil Collins. Perhaps my all-time favorite. It’s been sad to see his decline.”
