Graham Greene was a celebrated Canadian Indigenous actor, leaving a mark on film and television with his career spanning over four decades.
Greene began his acting career with theatre studies at the Centre for Indigenous Theater in Toronto.
His stage work led to a wide range of roles in Canadian television during the 1970s and ’80s.
Greene had his breakout role as Kicking Bird in Kevin Costner’s western film Dances with Wolves.
His performance was praised worldwide and earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor, making Greene the second Indigenous actor to be nominated for an Academy Award.

Following his breakthrough, the actor became a staple in the film industry with roles in Thunderheart, Die Hard with a Vengeance, The Green Mile, and Wind River.
Greene was also a fan favorite in The Twilight Saga: New Moon, playing tribal elder Harry Clearwater, sharing his Indigenous culture within the franchise.
The actor was praised for bringing visibility to First Nations communities within Hollywood, breaking Indigenous stereotypes to a worldwide audience.
Greene is also a Grammy, Gemini, and Canadian Screen Award winner and Independent Spirit nominee.
The actor has a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame and received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award in his native country earlier this year.

Michael Greene, the star’s agent, confirmed his passing to Deadline.
Greene died September 1 in a Toronto hospital after battling a long illness.
“He was a great man of morals, ethics, and character, and will be eternally missed.
“You are finally free. Susan Smith is meeting you at the gates of heaven,” Michael added, referencing the actor’s longtime agent, who died in 2013.
Greene has one upcoming thriller movie, Ice Fall, starring alongside Joel Kinnaman.
The star is survived by his wife of 35 years, Hilary Blackmore; daughter Lilly Lazare-Greene; and grandson Tarlo.
