Barack Obama’s daughter has quietly changed her name amid launching her new Hollywood career.
The 44th President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, served the country between 2009 and 2017.
But he’s arguably just as famous for his family as for his politics.
His relationship with his wife, Michelle, has spanned a whopping 31 years, and the pair share two daughters, aged 25 and 22.
And today, it’s been revealed that one of Obama’s daughters has changed her name and embarked on an unexpected career path…
Name changes are surprisingly common among celebrities – like Reginald Kenneth Dwight, who is pop legend Elton John and Farrokh Bulsara, better known as the Queen star Freddie Mercury.
Other stars like Breaking Bad actor Aaron Paul aka Aaron Paul Sturtevant, opted for a simpler change.
But Malia Obama’s name change appears to have a more significant motive behind it…
Malia is making her first moves into the world of show business, working as an actor and screenwriter, as per IMDb.
She’s previously earned credits as a staff writer on the Amazon Prime show Swarm.
Her latest film project, The Heart, debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, but fans noticed something odd about Malia’s movie credit…
She appears to have quietly changed her name, leaving fans baffled.
“Obama’s daughter trying to sneak past nepo baby discourse. Bro, you are Obama’s daughter!” one writes on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Another agrees: “Like if you wanna be a filmmaker that’s cool but we all know who you are, you’re Obama’s daughter. You can’t hide that.”
However, some others disagree, with one writing: “Would it be better if she called herself Malia Obama (yes that one) on her publicity? She can’t win. I hope her art career goes well!”
“How much you wanna bet she’d get dragged if her filmmaking name was Malia Obama? Leave this Harvard graduate with multiple successful projects [alone],” another adds.
A third pens: “Honestly, nepo babies can’t win, like yeah obviously we know that’s Malia Obama, but she’s honestly trying her best to just make her art and make her art stand on its own.”
In her Sundance Institute’s ‘Meet the Artist’ spotlight video, Malia describes her project as ‘an odd little story, somewhat of fable, about a man grieving the death of his mother after she leaves him an unusual request in her will’.
But people weren’t so focused on the movie project.
Instead, all eyes were on Malia’s credit.
She appears to have dropped the Obama from her name entirely and is now going as Malia Ann.
However, Obama or not, it looks as though Malia has a big career ahead of her.
“I feel like she’s just somebody who’s gonna have really good things coming soon,” her boss Donald Glover told Vanity Fair in March 2022. “Her writing style is great. We can’t be easy on her just because she’s the [former] President’s daughter.”
