A high school in California has ignited controversy after students were instructed not to chant “USA” during sporting events and rallies.
At Vista Del Lago High School in Folsom, California, students frequently chanted “USA” to express their pride during games and rallies. However, school officials have requested that students refrain from chanting, as it may be perceived as intolerant.
Senior Ryan Bernal expressed his feelings to KOVR, stating, “I wasn’t angry, but I was definitely like, ‘Why can’t we chant USA?’ To say USA, you know, we’re all the same. We’re all American. It doesn’t matter what your skin tone is or where you’re from.”Vista Del Lago High School spirit wearBest online coursesStudent textbooks
During a leadership class, staff at the high school brought this issue to the attention of the students.
Daniel Thigpen, the Communications Director for Folsom Cordova Unified, remarked, “To practice empathy, to practice kindness and to practice patriotism. You can do both.”
KOVR reported that in various schools nationwide, the “USA” chant has been utilized in a derogatory manner towards individuals of different ethnic backgrounds.
Mike Garrison from the California Interscholastic Federation stated, “There’s a time and a place to yell that and cheer that.”
The principal of Vista Del Lago High School communicated a warning against the chant to district families via email, a warning that was also announced to students through the school’s P.A. system. The principal noted that sometimes using the chant can convey an unintended message.
The principal further clarified that the USA chant is acceptable, but only during appropriate moments, such as after the Pledge of Allegiance or following the national anthem.
Mother Natalie Woodbury shared her perspective, saying, “I want to chant USA because I want us to pull together and help, not because I want anybody to feel left out or not a part of our country.”
District officials have made it clear that chanting “USA” is not prohibited.
Readers expressed their opinions regarding the story on Facebook.
“It is principals like this one that are gradually undermining our public schools, and that is unfortunate!” one reader remarked. “We should be grateful that the students participated in their schools’ sporting events and expressed their patriotism for our country, the Grand Old USA. Shame on the leadership of that school.”
“Intolerable and offensive?” another user commented. “Are you serious? You kids should chant USA as loudly as possible! Thank the Lord for you kids! Stand firm in your First Amendment rights that are granted by God! We are all so proud of you! God bless you all!!
