Miley Cyrus has admitted to lying to Liam Hemsworth about her virginity.
Cyrus, 31, is an American singer-songwriter with hit songs such as ‘Flowers,’ ‘Wrecking Ball,’ and ‘Party In The U.S.A.’
As the daughter of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, she emerged as a teen idol during the 2000s when she became the lead character in the Disney Channel TV series Hannah Montana.
She met Australian actor Liam Hemsworth, best known for his role as Gale Hawthorne in The Hunger Games film series, in 2009.
For years, they were one of Hollywood’s biggest celebrity couples and now, in the aftermath of their divorce, Cyrus has revealed she lied to her former husband.
Cyrus and Hemsworth met while shooting the coming-of-age-romantic drama film The Last Song. Shortly after the movie wrapped, the two confirmed their romance.
The pair would have a tumultuous relationship, being on and off again.
To everyone’s surprise, the two became engaged in 2012, with Cyrus telling People magazine: “I’m so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam.”
But just months after this exciting update, breakup rumors swirled and in April of 2013, the pair postponed their wedding – although they never announced an official date.
At the time, a source told People: “They’re still engaged and living together. They just realized that there is no rush with the wedding and that it’s better that they wait a bit.”
Another source would tell the outlet that Cyrus and Hemsworth wanted to ‘figure out their problems’ before tying the knot.
In September 2013, after months of rumors, the two unfollowed each other on Instagram and two days later, confirmed their engagement was off.
Over the next few years, Cyrus and Hemsworth went their separate ways. Then, in January 2016, it was rumored the pair were back on.
The ‘Nothing Breaks Like a Heart’ singer would confirm this with a photo of her wearing her engagement ring on Instagram.
In an interview with Billboard, Cyrus said that following their 2013 breakup she focused on herself, explaining: “I needed to change so much. And changing with someone else not changing like that is too hard.”
Cyrus took to Instagram on December 26, 2018, and verified speculation that she and Hemsworth had tied the knot with a black and white photo of the pair kissing.
But just months after confirming their marriage, in August 2019, a representative for Cyrus told People: “Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time.”
Over the years, fans have speculated that a few of Cyrus’ songs have referenced her relationship with The Witcher star.
One of the more notable tracks is ‘Flowers,’ which was critically praised and a huge commercial success.
The song’s opening verse convinced fans it’s about Hemsworth, as it seemingly references the couple’s Malibu home being destroyed in the Woosley Fire of 2018, per Billboard.
Cyrus sings: “We were good, we were gold / Kind of dream that can’t be sold / We were right till we weren’t / Built a home and watched it burn.”
Although it’s hugely up to speculation whether the pop icon addresses Hemsworth in her songs, she has directly addressed their time together.
During an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Cyrus admitted that she lied to Hemsworth about her virginity and kept it up for nearly 10 years.
The ‘7 Things’ singer said she told her ex that she had lost her virginity to somebody else so she ‘didn’t seem like a loser.’
“He said, ‘Oh, who have you had s** with?’ And I couldn’t think of anyone, so I just made somebody up that I knew but we had never actually had s** before,” she recalled.
But when Cyrus was 24 years old, she was forced to come clean.
The pop star said: “[Hemsworth’s] friend ended up marrying him, and then it was like, ‘Oh now my friend is marrying someone you’ve hooked up with?’
“So then when I was, like, 24, I had to say that I lied when I was 16. It was a lie that I held onto for, like, 10 years.”
