In a dramatic escalation, US and Israeli forces carried out coordinated airstrikes against Iran this weekend. Following the attacks, Iran issued a chilling threat to the United States, and Donald Trump responded.

On Saturday, Donald Trump authorized airstrikes in collaboration with Israel after intelligence suggested that US and Israeli forces could simultaneously target several high-ranking Iranian leaders and clerics at a compound in Tehran, as reported by two sources knowledgeable about the planning.

On Sunday, it was reported that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had been killed, along with four members of Khamenei’s family during the airstrikes.

Trump shared a video on Truth Social stating: “It’s a very simple message. They will never have a nuclear weapon. We’re going to destroy their missiles and raze their missile industry to the ground. It will be totally again obliterated.”

The president also issued a stern warning: “Lay down your arms or face certain death.”

US and Israeli forces executed coordinated airstrikes.

This joint military operation followed weeks of stalled negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear program. Tehran had declined to dismantle its nuclear capabilities, leading the United States to enhance its military presence throughout the Middle East. Trump had previously cautioned that a failure to reach an agreement would result in “serious consequences.” Israel later confirmed that the operation specifically aimed at both the Supreme Leader and Iran’s President, Masoud Pezeshkian.

Iran reacted promptly. Tehran declared the “first wave of extensive missile and drone attacks” against Israel, according to the New York Post. The situation intensified as Iranian officials indicated preparations for attacks on US bases.

State media reported Iran’s readiness to initiate what it termed “the most devastating offensive operation in the history of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s armed forces,” as stated by VT.

“You have crossed our red line”

The semi-official Fars News Agency reported at around 6:15 a.m. local time (9:15 p.m. Saturday ET): “The most catastrophic offensive operation in the history of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s armed forces is set to commence towards the occupied territories and American terrorist bases imminently.”

US and Israeli officials now anticipate that the military campaign within Iran may extend for several weeks. On Sunday, Iran’s parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, gave a televised address. He denounced the leaders of the US and Israel as “filthy criminals” and vowed to deliver “devastating blows” in retaliation.

“You have crossed our red line and must pay the price,” Qalibaf stated. “We will inflict such devastating blows that you will find yourselves begging.”

Trump’s response

Subsequently, Trump took to Truth Social to address Iran’s threats: “Iran just announced that they intend to strike very hard today, harder than they have ever done before. THEY BETTER NOT DO THAT, HOWEVER, BECAUSE IF THEY DO, WE WILL STRIKE THEM WITH A FORCE THAT HAS NEVER BEEN WITNESSED BEFORE! Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

The situation remains precarious, with both parties indicating that the conflict could escalate further.
