In Osceola County, Florida, a young mom is still grieving the death of her mother and her three little kids.
A deadly car accident in 2023 changed Sabrina Hernandez’s life forever.
“It’s so recent. It still feels like it just happened, but at the same time, it feels like it was ages ago,” she shared with WESH2 earlier this year.
Sabrina Hernandez’s kids — Mylie, Marvin, and Anayari — were in a car with their grandparents when a fast car driven by a 15-year-old ran a stop sign and crashed into them. The accident happened on Sunday, September 3, 2023, at the intersection of Laurel Avenue and San Miguel Road in Poinciana.
Sabrina’s dad survived but was in critical condition, while her mom and all three kids lost their lives.
Fifteen minutes before the crash, Hernandez had talked to her son. “My son called me and said, ‘Mommy, we’re 15 minutes away.’ I said, ‘OK, I’ll see you soon. I love you.’ And he replied, ‘I love you, too,’” she remembered.
When they didn’t come home, Hernandez called every family member, but no one picked up. She rushed to the hospital and found out the heartbreaking news: her mom and son had died at the scene, and her other two kids passed away at the hospital.
Even though she was really sad, Hernandez found the courage to forgive the teenage driver. “I forgive him because I am Christian. I believe in Jesus,” she said, using her faith to help her get through the terrible loss.
After everything that happened, Hernandez spoke up for change in her community. She wondered if the intersection could ever be made safer: she hoped a four-way stop or traffic lights could stop another tragedy like hers from happening.
“They were supposed to bury me, and now I have to bury all of them!” she cried.
Sabrina’s husband, Mickey Hernandez, expressed his sadness on Facebook: “God, please hold my babies tight; tell them mommy and daddy are doing just fine. I miss you guys so much!” He promised to keep living for their children and encouraged others to appreciate their kids every day.
In 2023, a candlelight memorial appeared at the crash site, filled with teddy bears, balloons, and pictures of the kids, as the community came together to grieve. The teenage driver suffered serious injuries, while a passenger had only minor injuries.
For a long time, nobody was held accountable for what happened, which really upset Sabrina. “When you make mistakes, especially big ones like this, you need to face the consequences,” she said.
However, in February 2025, FOX 9 reported that the father of a Florida teenager accused of causing a deadly crash in 2023 was charged with several counts of manslaughter, according to court documents.
Court papers claim that the father let his unlicensed 15-year-old drive three friends around before the tragic accident and even moved another car out of the way so his son could get to the vehicle.
The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed that the teenager is facing four counts of vehicular homicide related to the crash.
The Hernandez house, which used to be filled with laughter and chaos, now feels like a place full of memories. “It was noisy, chaotic… full of joy. I really miss it. The quietness reminds me that they’re not here anymore,” Sabrina shared in a recent interview with WESH.
But even with their sadness, there was a glimmer of hope. In 2025, the couple found out they were going to have a baby boy.
“This doesn’t replace my wonderful three kids, but it was a way for God to give me back something I loved so much, and that was being a mom,” Hernandez explained.
Painting the nursery was both hard and healing. “Our kids’ rooms stayed the same until last week. Even my daughter’s room. Her trash can still had the paper she was drawing on. It was just too difficult for me.”
Baby Israel was born healthy in June 2025, according to updates from Sabrina and Mickey on social media.
Sadly, he will never get to know his cherished older siblings, who were taken away too soon. It’s now been exactly two years since this terrible tragedy, and Mylie, Marvin, and Anayari’s dad shared his feelings on Facebook:
“Honestly, I still can’t believe September 3rd is almost here. I keep thinking about how the law dealt with this whole situation, along with the parents, who aren’t taking responsibility and are denying everything, and the kid getting just five years. I just can’t believe it all.”
