After saying goodbye to legends like Dolly Parton and Tim Curry, fans are now mourning another familiar voice \u2014 Peter Cullen, the man behind some of the most beloved characters of our childhood.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cullen, the Canadian-born voice actor best known as Optimus Prime in\u00a0Transformers<\/em>\u00a0and Eeyore in\u00a0Winnie the Pooh<\/em>, has died at 85.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cullen\u2019s agent confirmed that Cullen passed away Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles. His cause of death has not been revealed.<\/p>\n

TMZ\u00a0was the first outlet to break the heartbreaking news.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeter Cullen passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family \u2014 and held in the hearts of his many friends and countless fans worldwide,\u201d his family said.<\/p>\n

They asked fans to \u201chonor his remarkable legacy by serving your communities and leading others with compassion, integrity, and loyalty and always remember \u2018be strong enough to be gentle.’\u201d<\/p>\n

For millions of fans, Cullen\u2019s deep, unmistakable voice\u00a0was<\/em>\u00a0Optimus Prime. He first brought the heroic Autobot leader to life in the original animated\u00a0Transformers<\/em>\u00a0series in the 1980s, beginning a role that would follow him for decades.<\/p>\n

When Optimus Prime was killed in the 1986 animated movie, fans were devastated. The reaction was so intense that the character was eventually brought back, with Cullen later returning to the role for Michael Bay\u2019s live-action\u00a0Transformers<\/em>\u00a0films beginning in 2007.<\/p>\n

But Optimus Prime was only part of Cullen\u2019s extraordinary legacy.<\/p>\n

Generations of children knew him as the voice of Eeyore in\u00a0The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh<\/em>. He also voiced Monterey Jack in\u00a0Chip \u2018n Dale Rescue Rangers<\/em>, KARR in\u00a0Knight Rider<\/em>, and even Mario in the original\u00a0Donkey Kong<\/em>\u00a0animated series.<\/p>\n

He also supplied the terrifying vocal effects for the creature in\u00a0Predator<\/em>, giving one of cinema\u2019s most frightening monsters its unforgettable sound.<\/p>\n

\u201dI don\u2019t know how many voices I have done over the years. I couldn\u2019t be dead on with an answer, but it has to be about 100 different characters,\u201d the veteran television and film voice actor said in 2008.<\/p>\n

Yet behind that legendary voice was a deeply personal story.<\/p>\n

Cullen once revealed that his brother Larry, a U.S. Marine and decorated Vietnam veteran who had experienced combat, inspired the way he approached Optimus Prime. His brother taught him that a true hero was \u201dstrong enough to be gentle.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was his tone of voice and delivery as a leader, his control that impressed me, and I applied my brother\u2019s attitude toward life to Optimus Prime,\u201d Cullen shared.<\/p>\n

Cullen also\u00a0The Birmingham News<\/em>\u00a0that Optimus Prime held a special place in his heart and was his favorite character.<\/p>\n

\u201cOptimus is my favorite character because it\u2019s been so well received and it\u2019s had such an effect on so many people. Because of that, I hold it closer than any other character I\u2019ve done.\u201d<\/p>\n

For those who grew up hearing his voice, Peter Cullen wasn\u2019t simply a voice actor. He was Optimus Prime. He was Eeyore. He was part of childhood.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And now, that unmistakable voice has gone silent.<\/strong><\/p>\n
