Luce Professor of Journalism, said in a statement that he was \u201cexcited and honored\u201d to welcome the\u00a0<em>60 Minutes<\/em>\u00a0vets to campus. \u201cTheir distinguished track records in investigative reporting highlight the amazing opportunity our students will have to learn from them, and we look forward to having Sharyn and Scott with us this year.\u201dAlfonsi\u2019s time at\u00a0<em>60 Minutes<\/em>\u00a0came to an end in May after CBS declined to renew her contract. On May 28,\u00a0<em>60 Minutes<\/em>\u00a0parted ways with journalists Cecilia Vega and Alfonsi. At the time, Weiss and CBS News president Tom Cibrowski also fired executive producer Tanya Simon, replacing her with tech journalist Nick Bilton.\u00a0 Alfonsi told\u00a0<em>The New York Times<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em>that the exits sent a \u201cchilling message to the entire newsroom\u201d and that she believed it was \u201ca deliberate choice to penalize a journalist for refusing to sanitize accurate reporting.\u201d Alfonsi had worked on\u00a0<em>60 Minutes<\/em>\u00a0since 2015.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_16-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block people-sc-block-spotlight--mid-circ mntl-sc-block-spotlight--mid-circ mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_20-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Five months prior, Weiss\u00a0abruptly pulled\u00a0Alfonsi\u2019s planned<em>\u00a060 Minutes<\/em>\u00a0segment that focused on Venezuelan men who were deported by the Trump administration to\u00a0a notorious El Salvador prison\u00a0in December, sparking backlash. It later aired in January.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_22-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">As for Pelley, who began his journalism career with CBS News in 1989, he was accused by Bilton of \u201cambush\u201d and \u201cmisconduct\u201d during a staff meeting in June before his firing. He later released a statement in which he accused the program\u2019s news executives of prioritizing political bias and currying favor with President\u00a0Donald Trump\u2018s administration.
