The former\u00a060 Minutes<\/em>\u00a0correspondents, who\u00a0exited the newsmagazine\u00a0in May and June following CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss\u2019 takeover of the program, will now be taking their talents to Columbia Journalism School as the newly appointed Journalists in Residence for the 2026\u201327 academic year.<\/p>\n

CJS announced the staffing news on Monday, Aug. 3, as part of the school\u2019s \u201cCJS2030: Democracy Initiative.\u201d The appointment will have both Pelley, 69, and Alfonsi, 54, working directly with journalism students both together and separately through \u201clectures, workshops and special events,\u201d per the school.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a critical time for a free press,\u201d Pelley said in a statement. \u201cColumbia is leading the way in training the next generation of great journalists and I am honored to join Sharyn in that vital cause.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jelani Cobb, dean of Columbia Journalism School and Henry R. Luce Professor of Journalism, said in a statement that he was \u201cexcited and honored\u201d to welcome the\u00a060 Minutes<\/em>\u00a0vets to campus. \u201cTheir distinguished track records in investigative reporting highlight the amazing opportunity our students will have to learn from them, and we look forward to having Sharyn and Scott with us this year.\u201dAlfonsi\u2019s time at\u00a060 Minutes<\/em>\u00a0came to an end in May after CBS declined to renew her contract. On May 28,\u00a060 Minutes<\/em>\u00a0parted ways with journalists Cecilia Vega and Alfonsi. At the time, Weiss and CBS News president Tom Cibrowski also fired executive producer Tanya Simon, replacing her with tech journalist Nick Bilton.\u00a0 Alfonsi told\u00a0The New York Times<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>that the exits sent a \u201cchilling message to the entire newsroom\u201d and that she believed it was \u201ca deliberate choice to penalize a journalist for refusing to sanitize accurate reporting.\u201d Alfonsi had worked on\u00a060 Minutes<\/em>\u00a0since 2015.<\/p>\n

Five months prior, Weiss\u00a0abruptly pulled\u00a0Alfonsi\u2019s planned\u00a060 Minutes<\/em>\u00a0segment that focused on Venezuelan men who were deported by the Trump administration to\u00a0a notorious El Salvador prison\u00a0in December, sparking backlash. It later aired in January.<\/p>\n

As for Pelley, who began his journalism career with CBS News in 1989, he was accused by Bilton of \u201cambush\u201d and \u201cmisconduct\u201d during a staff meeting in June before his firing. He later released a statement in which he accused the program\u2019s news executives of prioritizing political bias and currying favor with President\u00a0Donald Trump\u2018s administration. He claimed the newsmagazine \u201clost its DNA when our entire senior leadership and two of our best on-air correspondents were cruelly fired without cause\u201d in late May 2026, referring to his colleagues.<\/p>\n

Last week,\u00a060 Minutes<\/em>\u00a0confirmed that it had added\u00a0four new faces\u00a0to its roster:\u00a0New York Times<\/em>\u00a0opinion columnist Ross Douthat, documentary filmmaker\u00a0Sebastian Junger, former Vice News journalist Gianna Toboni and CBS News\u2019 new senior global affairs correspondent Trevor Phillips.\u00a0Norah O\u2019Donnell\u00a0was promoted to\u00a060 Minutes<\/em>\u00a0correspondent, while vets\u00a0Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker and Jon Wertheim\u00a0are also returning for the program\u2019s 59th season, which kicks off on Sept. 13.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
