Movie<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>She is, however, best known for her role as chess prodigy Beth Harmon in\u00a0<em>The Queen\u2019s Gambit<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet when Taylor-Joy picked up a Golden Globe for her role in the\u00a0Netflix\u00a0drama, people were left extremely confused afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>A specific article had referred to her as a \u2018woman of color,\u2019 leaving many on the internet puzzled.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-141354\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-141354\" src=\"https:\/\/igvofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Screenshot-2024-07-31-at-11.11.50.png\" alt=\"Anya Taylor-Joy\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Anya Taylor-Joy was described as a \u2018woman of color\u2019 after an award win and it\u2019s left the internet confused. Is this a f***ing joke?! She is white and she is from Latin America.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are white people here too. Latin American is not an ethnicity, in any case, it makes reference to a geographical or cultural area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFriendly reminder that being Latina and being a woman of color is not always the same thing,\u201d somebody else said. \u201cCongrats to Anya Taylor-Joy (Argentina) for her Golden Globe win and for speaking up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, Variety has updated the story to better reflect Taylor-Joy\u2019s ancestry.<\/p>\n<p>On the website, a notice now reads: \u201cUPDATED: This story has been updated. A previous version identified Anya Taylor-Joy as a person of color. She has said she identifies as a white Latina.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taylor-Joy has never publicly addressed the backlash in detail, although Variety later corrected its original wording.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-141363\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-141363\" src=\"https:\/\/igvofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapinsta.app_449609741_3828690624074115_4349009820126317621_n_1080.jpg\" alt=\"Anya Taylor-Joy\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Anya Taylor-Joy says she\u2019s \u2018aware of the fact she doesn\u2019t look like a typical Latin person.\u2019 Credit: @anyataylorjoy\/Instagram<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"h-where-was-she-born\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where was she born?<\/h2>\n<p>Taylor-Joy was born in Miami, Florida, to her Scottish-Argentine father, Dennis Alan Taylor, and her mother, Jennifer Marina Joy.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Last Night in Soho<\/em>\u00a0star lived in Argentina until the age of six before moving to the UK, and she\u2019s also fluent in English and Spanish.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with\u00a0Vulture, Taylor-Joy addressed her childhood and how she doesn\u2019t want to take roles away from Latina actresses.<\/p>\n<p>The actress explained: \u201cI\u2019m aware of the fact I don\u2019t look like a typical Latin person, and that\u2019s not fair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to be someone that you can just sub in for that role when I\u2019m really white and blonde.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s not the first time she\u2019s been at the centre of a debate.<\/p>\n<p>When she attended a show during Paris Fashion week in 2023 alongside Jenna Ortega and Rachel Zegler, people called the trio out.<\/p>\n<p>Users online noted that Ortega, despite being Latina, is not a Spanish speaker.<\/p>\n<p>And this sparked a discourse online about what truly defines Latinx identity.<\/p>\n<p>In a lengthy article about the debate, Vogue conclude: \u201cYes, there is still work to be done in changing Latinx representation in Hollywood and music.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, we can remember that no matter where a person may be in their Spanish-language journey, they\u00a0<em>are<\/em>\u00a0Latina enough.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anya Taylor-Joy was described as a \u2018woman of color\u2019 after an award win and it\u2019s left the internet confused.
