The death penalty remains one of the most contentious aspects of the American criminal justice system.<\/p>\n

As of 2025, 27 states retain capital punishment, while 23 have abolished it or maintain moratoriums on executions, per\u00a0DPIC.<\/p>\n

Death row inmates spend years, sometimes decades, awaiting their fate as appeals wind through state and federal courts.<\/p>\n

The complexities of these cases often involve questions about mental health, juvenile sentencing, racial disparities, and the humanity of execution methods themselves.<\/p>\n

Currently, approximately 2,100 inmates sit on death row across the United States, their cases representing some of the most serious\u00a0crimes\u00a0in the nation while also raising profound moral and legal questions about state-sanctioned execution.<\/p>\n

The lengthy appeals process, which can stretch for 20 years or more, reflects the irreversible nature of capital punishment and society\u2019s struggle to balance justice with mercy.<\/p>\n

Now, Tennessee is preparing to make history by executing its first woman in more than two centuries, reigniting debates about capital punishment, mental health, and justice.<\/p>\n

A historic execution date<\/h2>\n

According to court filings dated September 30, reported by\u00a0Fox, Christa Gail Pike, now 49, is scheduled to be executed on September 30, 2026.<\/p>\n

She is the only woman currently on Tennessee\u2019s death row. If the sentence is carried out, Pike would become the first woman executed in Tennessee since 1820 and just the fourth woman executed by the state in its entire history.<\/p>\n

Records from the Death Penalty Information Center show that Martin Eve was the last woman executed in Tennessee, hanged in 1820 for her role as an accessory to murder.<\/p>\n

The rarity of women facing execution reflects broader patterns in capital punishment: women make up only about 2% of death row inmates nationwide, despite representing a larger percentage of those convicted of murder.<\/p>\n

Crime that shocked Tennessee<\/h2>\n

Pike was convicted for the brutal killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in January 1995, a crime that shocked the state and remains one of the most notorious in Tennessee\u2019s history, per the\u00a0New York Post.<\/p>\n

At the time of the murder, Pike was just 18 years old and enrolled in the Knoxville Job Corps, a federal career training program designed to help young people gain employment skills and build better futures.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors presented evidence that Pike became consumed by jealousy after beginning a\u00a0relationship\u00a0with fellow student Tadaryl Shipp, who was 17 at the time.<\/p>\n

Pike believed that Slemmer was romantically interested in Shipp, which fueled her rage and set in motion a chain of events that would end in horrific violence.<\/p>\n

On January 12, 1995, Pike, along with Shipp and another friend, lured Slemmer to a wooded area near the University of Tennessee\u2019s agricultural campus under false pretenses.<\/p>\n

What followed was an exceptionally violent attack that lasted for an extended period. Court records detail that Pike used a box cutter to cut Slemmer\u2019s throat and struck her with a meat cleaver. She carved a pentagram into Slemmer\u2019s chest and ultimately crushed her skull with a piece of asphalt.<\/p>\n

In a particularly disturbing detail that demonstrated the calculated nature of the crime, prosecutors said Pike kept a fragment of the victim\u2019s skull as a trophy and showed it to classmates, apparently proud of what she had done.<\/p>\n

Conviction and continued violence<\/h2>\n

In 1996, a jury convicted Pike of first-degree murder and sentenced her to death, making her the youngest woman ever sentenced to death in the United States at that time.<\/p>\n

Shipp received a life sentence with the possibility of parole, while a third accomplice who testified against Pike was granted probation in exchange for cooperation.<\/p>\n

Pike\u2019s violent behavior did not end with her imprisonment.<\/p>\n

In 2004, she was convicted of attempting to strangle another inmate during a prison altercation, demonstrating a continued pattern of dangerous behavior behind bars.<\/p>\n

This incident resulted in an additional 25-year sentence added to her existing punishment, further complicating any arguments for leniency.<\/p>\n
