An \u201cunruly toddler\u201d grounded a Toronto-bound flight after refusing to sit down and buckle up, leaving an entire plane of passengers stranded overnight and the airline trying to explain what went wrong.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The unusual travel nightmare unfolded on Aug. 6 aboard a redeye Porter Airlines flight, which was scheduled to carry passengers from Victoria International Airport in British Columbia to Toronto Pearson International Airport.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0aircraft\u00a0\u2013 which has 132 seats \u2013 had already pulled away from the terminal and was taxiing toward the runway when the problem inside the cabin became impossible to ignore.<\/p>\n

A young\u00a0child\u00a0was \u201cstanding in their seat and would not secure their seatbelt,\u201d and \u201cattempts by the accompanying parent and crew to address this were unsuccessful,\u201d according to a statement released by the airline.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe aircraft could not take off in this unsafe condition, so the crew elected to return to the terminal and have the passengers disembark,\u201d Porter added.<\/p>\n

But getting there didn\u2019t bring a quick end to the ordeal.<\/p>\n

\u2018It took forever\u2019<\/h2>\n

Passenger Hillary Hertzberg said the situation dragged on for close to an hour before the child and accompanying parent finally left the aircraft.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt took forever,\u201d Hertzberg told\u00a0CBC News. \u201cThe kid eventually got off the plane at 11:30 [p.m.], so we had been on the flight for about almost an hour at that point.\u201d<\/p>\n

By then, the clock had become another problem.<\/p>\n

Removing the pair, retrieving their baggage and completing the necessary paperwork took enough time that the aircraft could no longer depart before Victoria\u2019s \u201cscheduled airfield closure\u201d at 12:30 a.m., according to Porter spokesperson Brad Cicero.<\/p>\n

Instead of\u00a0flying\u00a0to Toronto that night, everyone onboard had to get off.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe apologize for the effect this had on other passengers, who were able to depart on a flight the following day,\u201d Cicero said.<\/p>\n

For passengers suddenly stranded in Victoria, however, frustration over the cancellation was only part of the story, as people onboard came away with very different impressions of the child at the center of it.<\/p>\n

\u2018They\u2019re obviously terrified\u2019<\/h2>\n

In an interview with\u00a0The Canadian Press\u00a0(CP), passenger Aryeh Kozuch admitted there was \u201ca lot of frustration\u201d inside the cabin, but he pushed back against suggestions that the child was simply throwing a tantrum or running wild.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not gonna lie, I never even considered the idea that it was gonna be an unruly toddler,\u201d Toronto\u2019s Kozuch told CP. \u201cI thought it was an unruly adult.\u201d<\/p>\n

From where Kozuch was sitting, the child\u2019s behavior looked much more like fear.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey just kept hiding under their seat. If they got forced into [being] strapped in, they just kind of slid out underneath,\u201d the 26-year-old said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was a child that was in a tube with 150 people\u2026They\u2019re obviously terrified, and their response was to try and hide under the seat in front of them,\u201d Kozuch continued, adding, \u201cThat\u2019s so different than a kid running around and screaming.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Selfish behavior\u2019<\/h2>\n

The bigger argument online centered on the parent, particularly after Kozuch said he wouldn\u2019t have expected them to physically force a child into a seatbelt with a plane full of passengers watching.<\/p>\n

Plenty of people disagreed.<\/p>\n

\u201cActually, that\u2019s exactly what I\u2019d expect the parents to do,\u201d one\u00a0Reddit\u00a0user wrote.<\/p>\n

Another argued that when it came to getting safely buckled into an airplane seat, there was little room for negotiation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI absolutely would judge the hell out of the parents for not forcing the kid into the seatbelt,\u201d the commenter wrote. \u201cThere are very few times where things are non-optional, and this is one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

For others, the bigger issue was how long the situation was allowed to continue before the family left the aircraft.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbout 10-15 mins I\u2019d also expect the parents to leave the airplane instead of inconveniencing every other passenger on the flight,\u201d one person wrote. \u201cInstead, it took an hour\u2026This is completely on [the parents] and their selfish behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0Another added, \u201cObviously \u2013 it\u2019s the parents\u2019 fault for dragging their toddler on a red eye and then not parenting them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Porter has apologized for the disruption but has not publicly said whether passengers will receive compensation for expenses connected to the cancellation.<\/p>\n
