Former\u00a0boxing\u00a0prospect Prichard Col\u00f3n is dead at 33, more than a decade after suffering a catastrophic brain injury in the ring.<\/p>\n

Col\u00f3n\u2019s father and former trainer, Richard, announced his death on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood morning, everyone. I regret to inform you of the passing of my son Prichard from this earthly world,\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>he wrote via social media (H\/T\u00a0TMZ).\u00a0\u201cHe is now in a better place.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Richard later thanked supporters for the years of prayers and support.<\/p>\n

The announcement ended an 11-year ordeal that began when Col\u00f3n entered a 2015 fight as one of boxing\u2019s brightest prospects.<\/p>\n

He had compiled a perfect 16-0 record with 13 knockouts.<\/p>\n

Many within boxing expected the Puerto Rican fighter to eventually challenge for a world championship.<\/p>\n

Instead, one night changed everything.<\/p>\n

Col\u00f3n faced Terrel Williams on Oct. 17, 2015, at EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia.<\/p>\n

The fight quickly became controversial.<\/p>\n

Williams repeatedly landed punches to the back of Col\u00f3n\u2019s head. The referee issued warnings during the bout.<\/p>\n

Col\u00f3n eventually complained about the blows and appeared increasingly distressed. Williams dropped him twice during the ninth round.<\/p>\n

Col\u00f3n then returned to his dressing room after suffering his first professional defeat.<\/p>\n

His condition deteriorated rapidly. He became dizzy, vomited and eventually collapsed.<\/p>\n

Doctors discovered a subdural hematoma and performed emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain.<\/p>\n
