Netflix\u00a0have quietly added a \u2018masterpiece\u2019 viking drama with a star-studded cast to their roster \u2013 and viewers can\u2019t get enough.<\/strong><\/p>\n

While rom-coms and\u00a0horrors, alongside documentary series, are some of Netflix\u2019s very best creations, some have said it\u2019s really time we had a bit more action on the scene.<\/p>\n

And it seems the platform have truly answered hopes and prayers, because this viking drama is up there with the very best, according to those who have watched it.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0American\u00a0dark fantasy\u00a0period\u00a0action drama (a mouthful) was first released in 2022, but it was only when the\u00a0film\u00a0landed on Netflix that fans really became aware of the hype.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou won\u2019t be disappointed\u201d<\/h2>\n

The film currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 90 percent, and has received raving reviews from those who have sat down to watch the \u2018masterpiece.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the better movies of the year that most people didn\u2019t see,\u201d one viewer wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s dark, gritty, and visually beautiful! The lead was well cast and is a great actor in his own right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another described the film as \u2018brutal and barbaric,\u2019 which, if you\u2019re into that kind of thing, sounds extremely enticing.<\/p>\n

In another glowing review, one fan added: \u201cGritty. Thought provoking. Not your average Hollywood thriller. It will probably change how you think about vikings \u2013 a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another said: \u201cI just finished seeing this movie, I remember when it came out two years ago, but for some reason I didn\u2019t pay it much heed.<\/p>\n

A star-studded cast<\/h2>\n

The story is based on the legend of Amleth\u00a0from Gesta Danorum by Saxo Grammaticus, and follows a Viking prince who \u2018sets out on a quest to avenge the murder of his father at the hands of his uncle.\u2019<\/p>\n

And there\u2019s a pretty impressive cast.<\/p>\n

Alexander Skarsg\u00e5rd plays Amleth, while\u00a0Nicole Kidman\u00a0plays his mother Queen Gudr\u00fan, and Claes Bang his uncle Fj\u00f6lnir the Brotherless.<\/p>\n

But the talent doesn\u2019t end there.<\/p>\n

The movie also stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Bj\u00f6rk, and Willem Dafoe, among many others.<\/p>\n

iNews also wrote a review of the film after it landed on the popular\u00a0streaming\u00a0platform.<\/p>\n

Film Focus Online added: \u201cViolent and powerful from start to finish, it tells an epic, period accurate Viking tale that easily immerses its audience throughout the entire run-time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAdventure awaits\u201d<\/h2>\n

The synopsis reads: \u201cAdventure awaits Prince Amleth, whose father was killed and mother was abducted by his ruthless uncle. However, the journey takes him through twists which unravel a dark truth about his family.\u201d<\/p>\n

The film is spoken in English, with sprinkles of Old Norse and Old East Slavic.<\/p>\n

Speaking to\u00a0The Independent\u00a0director Robert Eggers spoke about once being \u2018allergic\u2019 to Vikings \u2013 but one trip to Iceland in 2016 changed everything.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was unlike anything else I\u2019d seen. The grandeur, the ancientness, the otherworldliness\u2026it was the most powerful experience ever,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd this is awfully embarrassing to say, but I felt like the Norse gods were really there.\u201d<\/p>\n

The director added: \u201cWe live in such a secular society now, without easy access to the sublime or the profound.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat appeals to me about these past cultures is that the mythological\u00a0world\u00a0is the same as the real world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Having been added to Netflix in 2025, fans are continuing to discover the \u2018visually spectacular\u2019 film, which is called\u00a0The Northman<\/em>.<\/p>\n
