Instead, the future Oscar winner walked away with one of Hollywood\u2019s ugliest lessons.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-579921000\" class=\"newsner-after_first_paragraph\">\n<div id=\"intext_197571_1_wrapper\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Keep reading to learn more.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With\u00a0<em>The Odyssey<\/em>\u00a0introducing Anne Hathaway to a new generation of moviegoers and\u00a0<em>The Princess Diaries<\/em>\u00a0celebrating its 25th anniversary, attention has naturally turned to the Oscar winner\u2019s remarkable career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before she landed the role of Mia Thermopolis in 2001\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Princess Diaries<\/em>, Hathaway said she learned one of Hollywood\u2019s toughest lessons from a casting director when she was a young teenager.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-07943853b09dabe02276b3fb6d899033\" class=\"newsner-07943853b09dabe02276b3fb6d899033 newsner-incide_content_once\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt 16 years old, it was \u2018Congratulations, you have the part. I\u2019m not saying you need to lose weight. To all the people who are going to fat shame me in the upcoming months, it\u2019s not me, it\u2019s you. Peace xx.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She added, \u201cP.S, I wanted to set this to Queen\u2019s \u2018Fat Bottomed Girls\u2019 but copyright said no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Hathaway, the experience highlighted how much Hollywood had changed since she first entered the industry as a teenager.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-thin-thing\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The \u2018thin thing\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She recalled costume designer Anne Crabtree asking detailed questions about how her body naturally changed throughout the month so costumes could be adjusted accordingly \u2013 a huge shift from her experience at 16.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo, I had that, then 20 years later I have Ane Crabtree asking me what my body does on my moon \u2013 which I realized meant my period \u2013 so she can make adjustments for me,\u201d she said in her interview with Allure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The Devil Wears Prada\u00a0<\/em>star \u2013 who advocated \u201ca more inclusive approach to beauty standards\u201d while filming the sequel to the 2006 movie \u2013 said the conversation with Crabtree was a reminder that things were starting to shift.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was just this beautiful thing,\u201d she shared, adding, \u201cI am cautious in my praise of how Hollywood is shifting. There is so much more body inclusivity \u2013 which is great! But the thin thing is definitely still the centralized \u2018normal\u2019 expectation.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-no-shame-in-gaining-weight\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018No shame in gaining weight\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her message has also extended beyond movie sets.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-1492982242\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\">\n<div id=\"intext_197571_3_wrapper\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-9918774568ee80cf327f6012e3d6721d\" class=\"newsner-9918774568ee80cf327f6012e3d6721d newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few months after welcoming her first son in 2016, the star of\u00a0<em>The Hustle\u00a0<\/em>responded to comments about postpartum weight by sharing a photo of a pair of homemade denim shorts and a message that resonated with mothers everywhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is no shame in gaining weight during pregnancy (or ever),\u201d she wrote, according to\u00a0Today. Hathaway, who\u2019s expecting her third child, continued: \u201cThere is no shame if it takes longer than you think it will to lose the weight (if you want to lose it at all). There is no shame in finally breaking down and making your own jean shorts because last summer\u2019s are just too dang short for this summer\u2019s thighs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Off-screen, Hathaway encouraged women to embrace their changing bodies but on-screen, she sometimes had to dramatically change her own.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-taxed-my-body\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Taxed my body\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several years before sharing that message, she underwent a dramatic physical transformation to play Fantine in the 2012 film adaptation of\u00a0<em>Les Mis\u00e9rables<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 a performance that earned her an Academy Award but came at a significant cost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To portray the struggling factory worker, Hathaway lost 25 pounds, later telling\u00a0People\u00a0she \u201cwasn\u2019t in a good place\u201d during the process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019d lost an unhealthy amount of weight in two weeks,\u201d Hathaway said. \u201cI didn\u2019t know anything about nutrition. I taxed my body, and my brain bore the brunt of it for a while.
