In his memoir, he talks about a frightening parenting trick his mother used. During an interview about his book, titled \u201cFrom Under the Truck,\u201d he shared a story about a night filled with heavy drinking that ended with his mother\u2019s boyfriend passing out under a car.<\/p>\n

Childhood Memories<\/h2>\n

His mom, Jane, was really into wildlife conservation. When Josh Brolin and his brother Jess were kids, she had a wild game she liked to play with them. She would tell animals like cougars, coyotes, and bobcats to go \u201cSic \u2019em,\u201d and then those animals would chase after the boys!<\/p>\n

Brolin mentioned, \u201cYou knew if you didn\u2019t get on the other side of that shut door within a couple of seconds, you\u2019d be cleaning up fresh bloody marks somewhere on your body for the rest of the day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even though these stories sound super scary, Brolin admits that he\u2019s \u201cloath to say\u201d they were horrifying. In an interview, he said that while his mom could be tough to deal with, he always wanted her around.<\/p>\n

Sadly, Brolin\u2019s mom died in a car accident when she was just 55 in 1995. During his struggles with addiction, he used to think that 55 was a pretty good age to die, believing that by then, a person would have lived a full life.<\/p>\n

Brolin is now 56 years old, which is one year older than his mom was when she passed away. He understands now that he was wrong about life expectancy and that 55 isn\u2019t really that old. After struggling for a long time, he finally overcame his addiction. His dad is actor James Brolin, who is married to the famous Barbra Streisand. Brolin has shared how Streisand has acted like a stepmom to him.<\/p>\n

He often mentions Barbra Streisand and her way of showing \u2018tough love.\u2019 In one interview, he recalled a moment when he went to their house and said, \u201cI\u2019ll have a glass of wine.\u201d She looked at him and tilted her head, so he repeated, \u201cI\u2019ll have a glass of red wine, please.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued,\u00a0\u201cShe took a deep breath and then hit me with the question: \u2018Aren\u2019t you an alcoholic?\u2019 That was really bold of her\u2026 She always had a way of speaking her mind without holding back when we talked.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

He remembered the conversation: \u201cI said, \u2018I\u2019m an alcoholic, but I enjoy red wine.\u2019 She replied, \u2018You really shouldn\u2019t drink.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

He looks back on those moments of tough love with a sense of appreciation. Now at 56, he shares that he enjoys the benefits of getting older and being sober.<\/p>\n

\u201cI like aging. It\u2019s like a perfect reason to say, \u2018Alright, just relax, you don\u2019t have to be in a rush all the time,\u2019\u201d the actor mentioned.<\/p>\n

Addiction Struggle<\/h2>\n

In his memoir, he shares the story of how his addiction started. He remembers trying marijuana when he was only 9 and taking acid at the age of 13. One of the most powerful moments he describes is when he visited his grandmother as she was dying, and he smelled strongly of alcohol. This experience was a turning point for him.<\/p>\n

When he arrived at his 99-year-old grandmother\u2019s bedside, he was still feeling the effects of a hangover from the night before. That moment made him understand that he wanted to live many more years and change his life.<\/p>\n

Brolin said, \u201cI realized that would be the last time I ever drank.\u201d This happened back in 2013, and now it\u2019s been over ten years since he chose to live a sober life.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really enjoy being sober. I have way more fun,\u201d he explained. \u201cI\u2019m sure that whatever I face would be way harder if I were drinking.\u201d<\/p>\n
