Donald Trump returned to the White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner on Friday night, three months after the original event was cut short by a shooting.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The rescheduled dinner was held at Washington\u2019s Waldorf Astoria under heavy security, after the April event at the Washington Hilton descended into chaos when suspected gunman Cole Allen allegedly opened fire before the evening\u2019s programme had even begun.<\/p>\n

Donald Trump opened his remarks by acknowledging the shooting that had forced the dinner to be postponed. \u201cTonight we come back together to answer that heinous attack with unwavering resolve,\u201d he said. \u201cIn America we do not yield to political violence.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also revealed that his original speech for the April dinner had been significantly more aggressive.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was so psyched. I was going to rip people, and I don\u2019t know. Just something changed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really for the better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Secret Service officer Victor Gonzales, who was shot during the April attack but was protected by his ballistic vest and continued responding to the threat, received the White House Correspondents\u2019 Association\u2019s President\u2019s Award for Exceptional Service at the ceremony.<\/p>\n

Trump told a sex joke and nobody laughed<\/h2>\n

During the dinner Donald Trump\u00a0told the room a joke\u00a0about an elderly senator receiving a text from his wife saying she wanted him to come upstairs and make love to her when he got home. The punchline: the senator replied that he couldn\u2019t do both.<\/p>\n

The room stayed completely silent.<\/p>\n

Trump stared out at the audience and explained the joke himself. \u201cCan\u2019t get up on the stairs and make love,\u201d he said, pulling a face.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoes anybody get that?\u201d<\/p>\n

He then laughed off the awkward moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was the only thing I thought was good in this whole frickin\u2019 stupid speech they wrote,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was the only good one and that went down with not exactly great laughter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump debutes \u201cTrump 2028\u201d hat<\/h2>\n

Toward the end of his speech Trump teased what he called a big announcement and produced a red \u201cTrump 2028\u201d hat and told the audience he intended to run for a fourth term.<\/p>\n

The US Constitution bars any president from serving more than two elected terms. Trump has made similar jokes on multiple previous occasions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
