I didn\u2019t see the stab\u2026but then I looked at my brother\u2026I tried to help him,\u201d a teary-eyed Hunter said shortly after the incident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried to help him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Guilty of murder<br \/>\nThe case attracted national attention, with Anthony\u2019s attorneys arguing that he acted in self-defense during the confrontation. Jurors rejected that claim and on June 9, after only three hours of deliberation, they returned with a decision, finding the teenager guilty of murder.<\/p>\n<p>The jury also declined the claim that Anthony acted under \u201csudden passion,\u201d a legal argument that could have reduced the offense from first-degree to second-degree murder and significantly lowered the potential punishment. He didn\u2019t just die.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following the sentencing, Meghan addressed Anthony directly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou may have just been given a sentence of 35 years behind bars, but you can consider yourself lucky because I\u2019ve been sentenced to a lifetime without my son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anthony broke down in tears as the sentence was read in court.<\/p>\n<p>Judge stands by jury\u2019s decision<br \/>\nSpeaking to ABC affiliate WFAA after the trial, Judge John Roach said he fully supports the decision made by the jury.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were picked based upon the law, they listened to the facts, it happened in this courtroom, and they got a verdict,\u201d Roach said when asked whether the jurors got it right.<\/p>\n<p>The veteran judge, who has spent more than two decades on the bench, said the high-profile nature of the case never affected his approach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI certainly knew it was a very, very important case within our community,\u201d Roach told the outlet. \u201cOur community needed to heal quickly. They needed this case over. One way or another, uh, but the case had to be fair first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The judge added that \u201cit was an easy decision,\u201d and explained his \u201cprimary goal in every case is to make sure the defendant and the prosecution get a fair trial. Period.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roach acknowledged that not everyone would agree with how the trial was handled, but said public opinion is not something he focuses on when making decisions from the bench.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs long as I follow the law, I sleep well at night, I know I made people mad but I\u2019m not here to make them happy either,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNice young man\u201d<br \/>\nReflecting on the life of the teenager he had just sentenced to 35 years in prison, the judge suggested that Anthony now fully understands the consequences of his actions.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fphoto%2F%3Ffbid%3D10225288696457686%26set%3Da.3960399081654&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"771\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-origwidth=\"500\" data-origheight=\"771\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe seems like a nice young man who committed a crime and he understands today more than any day before the consequences of committing a crime like he did,\u201d Roach said.<\/p>\n<p>Although Anthony\u2019s trial has concluded, the legal battle is far from over.
