Every election cycle, Republicans drag out the same tired script: call anything they don\u2019t like \u201csocialist\u201d or \u201ccommunist,\u201d then act like they\u2019ve said something profound. They never define it, because definition would ruin the performance. It\u2019s just a vague, fear-soaked boogeyman they throw at the wall whenever someone suggests government should actually do something useful. That kind of rhetoric has been a long-running conservative tactic.

Meanwhile, a lot of us have figured out what they\u2019re really terrified of: the idea that our tax dollars could be used for things that benefit the public. Roads. Bridges. Public education. Childcare. Healthcare. The basic stuff that makes a society livable instead of a billion-dollar grift for corporations and contractors. Socialism, in the way people are using it here, is often about public ownership or control and using collective resources for public needs.

And that is exactly why Republicans lose their minds. If taxpayer money were tied to actual public benefit, their little free ride starts shrinking. The endless contracts, the zero oversight, the cozy access, the taxpayer-funded handouts dressed up as \u201csmall government\u201d would have to face scrutiny. Funny how the people screaming \u201canti-American\u201d are usually the ones most desperate to keep America working for everyone except the people paying the bill. Anti-socialism messaging has long been used to frame modest expansions of public programs as a threat.

Social Security, public schools, roads, Medicare, firefighters, libraries, clean water, disaster relief \u2014 none of that is evil. It\u2019s civilization. It\u2019s literally the difference between a functioning country and a private equity fever dream. So no, Republicans aren\u2019t defending freedom when they scream \u201csocialist\u201d at every public good.
