Ben Mitchell, 38, was a devoted father and winemaker. The vineyard manager for Taylors Wines in Auburn initially suffered from a shoulder injury sustained a year prior. He had his world upended when worsening symptoms led to an unexpected discovery of cancer in his peritoneal lining.

Scheduled for surgery after the 2024 vintage bottling, Mitchell’s plans were tragically cut short in November when intensified pain drove him to seek urgent medical attention.

Transferred from Clare hospital to Adelaide’s Lyell McEwin Hospital, extensive testing revealed the devastating reality of his condition, with doctors giving him a stark prognosis of just two weeks to live, even with potential treatments.

Choosing to forgo chemotherapy, Mitchell embraced his remaining days with remarkable spirit, managing to watch his four-year-old son Hugo’s Little Athletics event, embodying his life’s motto: “go hard or go home.”

His wife, Johanna, cherished his relentless positivity and community spirit, remembering him as a vibrant “people person” who made everyone feel at home with his infectious laughter and genuine interest in their lives.

In response to this sudden and profound loss, a close friend, Kate Sigut, started a GoFundMe to support Mitchell’s grieving family.

Describing the situation as an “unexpected and heartbreaking whirlwind,” Sigut highlighted Mitchell’s enduring warmth and kindness, which left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

The GoFundMe reads: “Ben was diagnosed with cancer in the last days of December and immediately put into end of life care.

“Though they should have had a lifetime together, Ben courageously held on for longer than expected to spend precious days with his family.

“This sudden and devastating loss has hit all those who knew Ben with such deep sadness, shock and with the question ‘Why them?!’ on everyone’s mind.

“These two genuinely beautiful and selfless humans have worked tirelessly to build their life, love and family together and with this tragedy, their legacy of love and compassion lives on, forever etched in the hearts of those they touched.”Screenshot 2024-11-07 at 10.29.11.pngCredit: GoFundMe

The campaign aims to offer some relief to Johanna and their sons, Hugo and Thomas, as they face the overwhelming task of moving forward without him.

This fundraising effort has already garnered significant support, raising over $38,000, a testament to the community’s deep affection and respect for Mitchell and his family.

In the face of such profound grief, the legacy of Ben Mitchell’s love and compassion continues to resonate, ensuring that even in absence, his impact remains.
