Parents say goodbye to their newborn as life support is switched off, then he starts breathing immediately

Many mothers would concur that the period of pregnancy and childbirth can be quite daunting, with the primary desire being to bring forth a healthy baby, full of life and vigor.

But one mom was faced with the unthinkable when her baby boy was born with medical issues that left him on a ventilator.

Lisa Hough posted a photograph of her adorable baby grandson, who was born to her daughter Chelsea, and also revealed the incredibly difficult decision that her daughter had to confront.

The mom of three and nana of two said her grandson Karson had been born with many medical complications.

“The only way to describe what has happened is that this beautiful baby boy has suffered two very rare traumatic conditions that are completely unrelated to one another,” Nana Lisa shared on her Facebook page.

She added her newborn baby grandson had suffered a “hemorrhage in the left temporal lobe” and had also been diagnosed with a rare, genetic, metabolic disorder called Non-ketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH).

His condition is described as critical, indicating that he would likely experience profound neurological impairment, functioning at the level of a 2-3 month old for the duration of his life, as noted by Lisa.

In light of the information provided by the medical team, his mother faced the excruciating decision to discontinue life support.

Lisa recounted the poignant moment they had to bid farewell to their beloved child.

“Although we were unprepared to part with Karson, we had accepted the unavoidable reality. After the withdrawal of intensive care and the ventilator, we were given a mere 10 minutes, during which we were informed that he would not breathe independently and that we should anticipate his heart stopping within that time frame.”

According to Lisa, it appeared that “God had other plans,” as she and her daughter experienced what they described as a miracle.

“Once the ventilator was removed, he began to breathe independently, his heart rate and oxygen levels stabilized, and now, five hours later, we have this miracle baby whom we were told would never breathe, swallow, develop gag reflexes, or even survive. He is breathing without assistance.

“He is swallowing. He is surviving. He has even opened his eyes slightly a few times today.”

Lisa noted that the doctors could not provide an explanation for the events, stating that no medical or scientific data supports the survival of this little fighter; their only conclusion is that it is a miracle.

“I am uncertain why I ever believed we were unworthy of a miracle… and while I do not know how much time we have with him, we have him now. And we will cherish every moment,” Lisa expressed.

Ultimately, on March 1, she and her family received the wonderful news that their precious child would be coming home that week.

“Every day, I am brought to my knees, and just when I think God is done, I am quickly reminded that he isn’t….I have no words for my gratitude and I will praise Him for as long as I have air in my lungs for giving Karson his,” Lisa wrote.

From the initial post, the commenters expressed overwhelming support for the journey, celebrating Karson’s survival with over 30,000 reactions to the announcement of the remarkable news that Karson not only survived but is also flourishing.
