The bromance between Rob Schneider and Adam Sandler is as strong as ever, with Schneider recently sharing just how often the Waterboy star reaches out to check in on him.
It’s been a minute since the two were seen on screen together—their last appearance being in 2020’s Hubie Halloween — but their friendship remains rock solid.
Schneider couldn’t help but sing Sandler’s praises during the New York premiere of Sandler’s new Netflix comedy special, Adam Sandler: Love You, on August 20.
The pair go way back, first crossing paths in the 1980s, and their chemistry was cemented when they starred together in the 1998 film The Waterboy.
Since then, they’ve become frequent collaborators, with their friendship only deepening over the years.
At 60, Schneider reflects on their nearly five-decade-long friendship with deep affection.
He told PEOPLE, “There’s not been a week in 30 years where he doesn’t check in on me.”
He elaborated, saying, “I mean, that’s true. No matter where I am in the world, I’ll get a phone call, sometimes in the middle of the night. He called me from Italy, [and said], ‘What are you doing?’
“I go, ‘It’s two o’clock in the morning.’ ‘Well get up. I need to talk to you. Are you good?'”
It’s heartwarming to see such genuine care between two longtime friends.
Schneider went on to marvel at how their bond has stood the test of time, noting, “We’ve been friends for five decades now,” and he still finds it incredible that Sandler continues to include him in all this stuff.
He didn’t hold back in expressing his admiration, saying, “He’s a special cat. I mean, I really, I don’t have any words to say except I love him, and I just want him to be healthy, happy, successful.
“He’s just incredible. And he’s doing Happy Gilmore 2. How amazing is that?”
Given that Happy Gilmore is a staple of Sandler’s filmography, the idea of a sequel has fans buzzing.
But will Schneider be a part of it? He teased, “We’ll see,” leaving us all hoping for another memorable collaboration between the two.
Schneider also took a moment to reflect on Sandler’s ever-evolving career.
“He’s just getting started,” he said, with clear admiration. “It’s beautiful. Him doing Hustle was great, and Uncut Gems is great. …”
“He’s working with really, really talented people. He’s got a new movie coming out with George Clooney for Netflix.
“It’s been a wonderful, great experience for him and a great deal for Netflix to get the biggest movie star in the world on there.”
It’s hard not to admire a friendship like theirs, one that’s lasted through decades of both personal and professional growth.
Schneider’s obvious pride in Sandler’s success and his continued support of his friend’s endeavors are truly touching.
As for the latest film, Sandler himself spoke to PEOPLE about making the Happy Gilmore sequel, expressing his excitement.
“I’m more than excited, probably the most excited I’ve been in many years to shoot something,” he said.
“We worked hard trying to write something that we thought people would have a good time with.”
