Joaquin Phoenix Speaks Up After Pulling Out Of A Gay Romance Film With ‘Graphic’ Sex Scenes Just Days Before Filming

Joaquin Phoenix exited the Todd Haynes gay romance movie just five days before shooting was set to begin.
Joaquin Phoenix has finally spoken up after making headlines for dropping out of a film just five days before it was supposed to start shooting.IndieWire was the first to report that the actor was no longer involved in the project.

This was surprising because Phoenix had played a major role in developing the movie.The film was supposed to feature Phoenix, known for his role as the Joker, alongside Danny Ramirez, who gained fame from Top Gun: Maverick.

Todd Haynes, who directed the critically acclaimed May December, was set to direct this film as well.

In an interview with Variety, Ramirez described the film as a “love story between two men set in the ’30s that has explicit sexual content.”There was some early speculation that this might be the reason Phoenix pulled out.

However, Variety’s report dismissed this idea.According to Variety, sources in the industry believe this theory doesn’t hold up.

Variety explained: “That theory is confusing to some sources, who reiterate that it was Phoenix who brought the project – and its NC-17 concept – to Haynes in the first place.”

Talking about the film’s development, Todd Haynes told Variety that Phoenix initially presented him with a collection of fragmented ideas.Haynes then turned these ideas into a script.

Haynes added: “Basically it was just this wonderful, organic way to create the script.””Joaquin was pushing it further into more dangerous territory, sexually.”

When asked about his decision to drop out at the press conference for Joker 2 at the Venice Film Festival, Phoenix responded.

According to Kyle Buchanan from the New York Times, Phoenix said: “It would just be sharing my opinion and the other creatives aren’t here to share their piece.””It doesn’t feel like that would be right. I don’t think that would be helpful so I just don’t think I will. Thank you.”

Given the timing of Phoenix’s withdrawal, the financial losses are expected to exceed seven figures.

IndieWire reported that there are several key stakeholders who will still need to be compensated for the film.

The project cannot move forward with Ramirez and another actor in Phoenix’s place.

When contacted, Todd Haynes’ representative chose not to comment.
