A brutally gory film dubbed the ‘John Wick of fighting Nazis’ has been branded a ‘masterpiece.’
There’s been a re-emergence of top-quality action movies, from the continuation of the Mission Impossible and James Bond franchises to new originals such as Atomic Blonde and Bullet Train.
But arguably, the most impactful action of the last decade is the John Wick series, acclaimed for its style and action sequences.
Now people are praising the studio behind the Keanu Reeves-led franchise over another action movie.
People who’ve seen the film are singing its praises on social media, with one viewer penning: “The best movie I’ve seen in a long time… a must-watch.”
“It’s a more important WWII film than Oppenheimer,” insists another.
A third person writes: “The film is incredible man, [a] really good watch.”
Somebody else says: “Masterpiece of cinema… this underrated film perfectly embodies the concept of [strength and determination].”
Reviewers are also extremely taken with the movie, with The Spectator‘s Deborah Ross writing: “It is handsomely filmed with a suitably menacing score and is economical, moving briskly from one set-piece to the next.
“I may recover one day, but I haven’t as of yet.”
Cath Clark pens for The Guardian: “For the rest of this extravagantly violent and cheerfully entertaining action film from Finland, director Jalmari Helander treats us to a comedy of deaths: a lavish grisly feast of Nazis meeting their maker in outrageous and wildly silly ways that had the audience I watched it with shrieking with laughter.”
Released in 2023, the action earned $13 million at the box office against a budget of $6 million.
It also has an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 94% and 6.9 out of 10 on IMDb.
The film also won big at Catalonia’s Sitges International Film Festival picking up Best Film, Best Music, Best Cinematography, and Best Actor for main star Jorma Tommila.
Sisu follows an elderly recluse called Aatami (Tommila) during the final days of WWII in Finland as he travels over 500 miles to bank some gold.
His mission to get rich is stalled when Nazis steal this from him. But it turns out they messed with the wrong miner as Aatami is a former commando, who decides to embark on bloody revenge.
One of the movie’s fans has actually come up with a theory on how Sisu and John Wick could be connected, speculating: “If they don’t tie this in to be a prequel/origin story for John Wick’s family then they are missing out for sure!
“Lionsgate should make Sisu the grandfather and how John’s family found their way into the hitman/revenge universe.”

Sisu is available to watch on Apple TV, Prime Video, AMC, Google Play, Microsoft, ROW8, Vudu, and YouTube.
