The news was first reported by TMZ, which confirmed that she passed away just days after entering hospice care in Palm Springs, Southern California.
This weekend, reports indicated that the decision to move her to hospice was made after she was diagnosed with dementia last year.
Additionally, a recent GoFundMe page created by her friends highlighted that Kirkland had been facing “life-threatening infections” after suffering a fall in the shower. The purpose of the page was to gather funds for her “urgent medical care”.
“She fell in the shower when she was left alone, injuring her ribs and foot, along with sustaining cuts and bruises,” the page stated.

After training at the Actors Studio and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Kirkland became a prominent figure in New York’s Off-Broadway and avant-garde scene during the 1960s, including a period with Andy Warhol’s Factory.
Her major film breakthrough came with Anna (1987), where she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress and won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama.
Throughout her six-decade career, Kirkland appeared in more than 200 films and television shows, including JFK, Bruce Almighty, and the series Roseanne.
Rest in peace, Sally Kirkland. Thank you for the wonderful memories!
