A Michigan mother says her son should be seen as a hero — but instead, the school expelled him.

In Lansing, Michigan, 11-year-old Savion McClurkin, a seventh grader at Dwight Rich School of the Arts, has been expelled after he disarmed a fellow student who brought a makeshift gun to school.

According to his mother, Savitra McClurkin, Savion took the weapon, unloaded it, and then reported the incident to a teacher. She says her son acted out of fear but also out of a desire to protect his classmates.

Savitra explained that her son has hunting experience, so he knew how to safely secure the firearm. “He was scared, but he thought he was helping the other kids around him,” she said.

Despite what many see as a brave act, Lansing School District decided on a long-term expulsion. Savitra says she has tried multiple times to reach district leaders to discuss the decision, but has received no response.

On Thursday night, she appeared before the Lansing School Board, urging them to reconsider, stressing that her son was only trying to do the right thing and prevent a dangerous situation.

So far, the district has declined to comment on individual student disciplinary matters.
