Even with the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the Black Sea resort area of Zatoka remains a popular spot for vacationers. Swimmers and sunbathers are still seen in the area, despite warnings about the dangers.

Last weekend, a terrible tragedy struck, leaving everyone in disbelief. Local officials have advised people to avoid swimming in the waters because of the high risk of mines coming in from the war zone.

On Sunday, August 10, that warning became a reality. At 11:30 AM local time, two men and one woman were killed by ‘explosive devices,’ as reported by the BBC.

“All of them were killed by explosive devices while swimming in areas that are off-limits for recreation,” said regional governor Oleh Kiper.

“This once again shows that being in unmonitored waters can be deadly. Each of them had gone through a thorough inspection — checking for shelters and ensuring there were no mine dangers both on land and in the water.”

Police in the area have cautioned visitors about the dangers of swimming in restricted zones, and as summer has come, the warnings have become more serious.

The names of the individuals who tragically lost their lives at the beaches between Karolino-Buhaz and Zatoka have not been revealed.

“It has been previously confirmed that three vacationers – one woman and two men – died while swimming due to two explosions from unknown objects. The identities of the deceased are still being confirmed,” the police stated in their report.

The Black Sea has been filled with mines ever since Russia started its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Both sides have placed these mines to protect their waters and ports, trying to block naval routes.

Due to weather and water conditions, some mines have been able to move and drift towards tourist areas.

United States President, Donald Trump, is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska this week to talk about ending this war.

“The much-anticipated meeting between me, as President of the United States, and President Vladimir Putin of Russia, will happen next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska,” Trump posted on his platform, Truth Social.

“More details will come soon. Thank you for paying attention to this issue!”

This is such a terrible tragedy. We are sending our thoughts and prayers to the families of those who lost their lives on this day.
