Trump Holds Back on Netanyahu

President Donald Trump is holding back from endorsing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of Israel’s October 27 election, according to Axios.

Trump has reportedly been asked several times whether he supports Netanyahu’s reelection but has stopped short of giving him his backing. The hesitation comes as Netanyahu faces difficult polling, with his coalition projected to fall well short of the 61 seats needed to form a government.

The relationship between the two leaders also appears to be under increasing strain. Trump reportedly remains personally fond of Netanyahu but has grown frustrated with his decisions involving Gaza, Iran and Lebanon.

The lack of an endorsement is notable given Trump’s previous public support for Netanyahu. For now, Trump appears to be keeping his options open as Israel heads toward a closely watched election.
