21-year-old Shelby Ann Carter was creating a beautiful family life. She and her boyfriend lived with her mom in Wyoming, Illinois. At the start of January 2017, they welcomed a lovely baby girl into their lives. Shelby was overjoyed to be a mom.
However, her dreams for the future would take a tragic turn. On January 30, 2017, the unimaginable happened — a terrible tragedy struck.
Shelby Carter was alone at home with her newborn when their house suddenly caught fire.
The flames spread rapidly, and within moments, the house was filled with toxic smoke — leaving no way to escape. Firefighters rushed to the scene, but when they finally managed to control the flames, they made a shocking discovery on the second floor.
Shelby Carter had succumbed to the smoke and passed away. She died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Yet, amidst this tragedy, the firefighters uncovered something remarkable — a testament to a parent’s willingness to do anything for her child.
Even in the most life-threatening situations, and with very little time to act, Shelby had the clarity to quickly secure her baby in the car seat.
This heroic mom had secured her newborn daughter in a car seat and then dropped her from the second-floor window. With her final breath, she gave her life for her daughter’s.
When the firefighters discovered the little girl, named Keana, they rushed her to the hospital, fearing she might have been harmed by the smoke.
However, thanks to Shelby Carter’s quick thinking and actions, her daughter was completely unharmed.
“It’s just amazing that she was able to gather her thoughts to save her baby… I’d say it’s nothing less than a miracle how it all turned out,” Chief of the Wyoming-Speer Fire Protection District Ed Foglesonger told The Washington Post.
Shelby Carter’s death was a heartbreaking loss for the residents of Wyoming, a tight-knit community of 1,400 people located about three hours southwest of Chicago.
After the tragedy, neighbors began sharing the news online to help rebuild the house and offer financial support for Shelby’s family.
In just a few weeks, their fundraising efforts reached nearly $40,000.
